Chapter 7 - The Desperate Call

At 6:00 AM the following morning, I sat in the penthouse suite of a quiet hotel in Manhattan, drinking Earl Grey tea while reviewing the morning financial news.
The front page of the Wall Street Journal business section featured a large photograph of Daniel kneeling on the ballroom floor.
The headline read: VANCE DYNAMICS COLLAPSES ON CEO'S WEDDING NIGHT: SECRET HOLDING STRUCTURE EXPOSES MASSIVE ASSET DEFICIT.
My phone, sitting on the glass coffee table, began to vibrate continuously.
I looked at the screen.
Daniel Vance Calling.
I let it ring until it stopped. Ten seconds later, it began to ring again. And again. And again.
On the tenth attempt, I picked up the phone, pressed answer, and placed it on speaker. I didn't say hello. I simply waited.
"Claire?!" Daniel’s voice came screeching through the speaker like a rusty hinge. He sounded completely unhinged, his breath ragged, his voice hoarse from crying and screaming all night. "Claire! Please! Answer me! Is that you?!"
"Hello, Daniel," I said calmly, taking a slow sip of my tea.
"Claire! What did you do?!" he sobbed, his composure entirely destroyed. "What did you do to my company?! They padlocked the warehouses! The servers are down! The trucks won't start! The board fired me! The bank froze my personal accounts! Please, Claire! Tell me this is a bad dream!"
"It isn't a dream, Daniel," I replied smoothly. "It's commercial law."
"Why?!" he screamed, his voice breaking into a pathetic whine. "Why would you do this to me?! We were married for twelve years! I gave you everything! I gave you a home! I gave you a status!"
I set my tea cup down with a soft clink.
"You gave me status, Daniel?" I asked, my voice dropping into an icy register. "For twelve years, I wrote your speeches. I audited your books. I negotiated your contracts. I restructured your debt when your father almost bankrupted you. And when you introduced me to investors, you called me your 'forgettable wife'."
"I didn't mean it!" Daniel cried desperately. "I was just joking! You know how I am! I was just trying to look strong in front of Vanessa!"
"And yesterday on the courthouse steps," I continued relentlessly, "you told me to enjoy economy class. You told me I would regret being difficult."
"I was stupid! I was an idiot! Please, Claire!" Daniel was weeping openly now, loud, ugly sobs echoing through the phone. "Vanessa left me this morning! She packed her bags and went back to her parents! She took the ring! The bank is foreclosing on the beach house because I used corporate funds for the down payment! I have nothing left!"
"You have your freedom, Daniel," I said softly. "Just like you wanted."
"Claire, please! I'm begging you!" Daniel stammered, his pride completely evaporated. "I'll give you whatever you want! I'll put your name on the company! I'll make you co-CEO! Just release the trucks! Turn the servers back on! If we don't start deliveries by noon, the supply chain contracts will default, and I'll go to prison for fraud!"
I leaned forward, looking out at the golden sunlight hitting the Manhattan skyscrapers.
"I don't want to be co-CEO of your company, Daniel," I said calmly. "I don't need your company."
"Then what do you want?!" he screamed in complete despair.
"I want you to learn what happens when you mistake a woman's utility for weakness," I said. "Goodbye, Daniel."

"Claire! No! Wait—!"
I hung up the phone and blocked his number permanently.
