Chapter 4 - The Ripple Effect

Silence began to spread from Table Four like a drop of ink expanding through clear water.

At first, it was just Richard Vance staring at the paper with his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. But within seconds, the lead underwriters sitting at the table leaned in to inspect the documents.

"Wait... is this legitimate?" whispered Marcus Vance, the lead investment banker for the IPO. "If Vanguard Fleet Management is owned by Claire Sterling, why is it listed as a primary asset on the S-1 filing for the public offering?"

"Because Daniel Vance lied on his SEC disclosures," Alistair Thorne stated deadpan, taking a slow sip of his water. "Or, more likely, he was too incompetent to realize that his former wife owned the asset architecture."

Marcus's face drained of all color. "If the SEC finds out we filed a public offering backed by leased assets owned by an hostile ex-spouse, our underwriting firm will be sued into oblivion! Stop the IPO filing immediately!"

"What are you gentlemen whispering about over here?"

The voice was loud, cheerful, and filled with unearned confidence. Daniel had walked over to Table Four holding two glasses of crystal champagne, with Vanessa trailing behind him, her diamond necklace sparkling in the light.

"You look so serious!" Vanessa giggled, placing her hand on Daniel's arm. "It's a celebration! Daniel just closed the final deal for the European expansion!"

Daniel beamed, looking down at Alistair Thorne. "Alistair! You haven't touched your champagne! Come on, man, drink up! Tomorrow we start preparing the roadshow for the IPO!"

Alistair Thorne slowly set his water glass down, placed his elbows on the table, and looked directly into Daniel's eyes.

"Daniel," Alistair said softly. "Do you know your ex-wife owns fourteen companies?"

The question hung in the air, heavy and sharp.

Daniel chuckled, shaking his head as if he had just heard a silly joke. "What? Claire? Don't be ridiculous, Alistair. Claire doesn't own companies. She doesn't even know how to run a business. She spent the last twelve years managing our domestic staff and decorating our houses."

Vanessa laughed again, a high-pitched sound. "Oh, Alistair! Someone must be playing a prank on you! Claire is probably sitting in an economy seat on her way to some cheap beach right now!"

Alistair didn't smile. He raised his hand, gesturing to the thick blue folder resting on the white tablecloth.

"This is not a prank, Daniel," Alistair said, his voice dropping into a register of cold, terrifying authority. "These are certified, notarized corporate filings from the Delaware Secretary of State, delivered to me by the law firm of Sterling & Pendelton forty-five minutes ago."

Daniel's smile began to falter, his brow furrowing slightly. "What... what filings?"

Marcus Vance stood up from the table, his face pale and furious. "Daniel, answer me right now! Who owns Vanguard Fleet Management?!"

"Vance Dynamics owns it!" Daniel snapped, his voice rising in irritation. "It's our subsidiary!"

"No, it isn't!" Marcus shouted, drawing the attention of neighboring tables. "It is a private LLC owned one hundred percent by Claire Sterling! And so is Apex Software! And so is the main logistics hub in Chicago!"

"That's impossible!" Daniel's voice cracked. "My name is on the company registration!"

"Your name is on the operating lease, you fool!" Alistair Thorne cut in, standing up slowly and buttoning his suit jacket. "A lease that was linked directly to your marital status. According to clause 14-B of the master commercial agreement, upon the dissolution of your marriage, the $1-per-year promotional lease rate expires instantly."

Alistair stepped closer to Daniel, pointing a finger at his chest.

"As of 5:00 PM today, when your divorce was finalized, the lease rates for all 450 trucks, all primary warehouses, and the dispatch software converted to fair-market commercial rates. You now owe Claire Sterling LLC $4.2 million per month in asset rental fees."

The champagne glass in Daniel's right hand slipped from his fingers.

It hit the hardwood floor with a deafening crash, shattering into hundreds of tiny crystal shards, splashing vintage champagne across the bottom of Vanessa's immaculate white bridal dress.
