Chapter 9 - The Shocking Decision

Twelve men sat around a forty-foot banquet table of dark walnut. Every single one of them wore bespoke suits and expressions carved from stone. Every single one of them turned to stare at Mara.
Their eyes dropped to the child in her arms, then to her simple, unadorned posture.
Salvatore sat at the head of the table. He stood as soon as she crossed the threshold. The other twelve men, seeing their Don rise, scrambled to their feet in hurried respect.
"Signori," Salvatore announced, his voice reverberating off the stone arches. "You all know why we survived this week. You know that our enemies sought to tear the heart out of this family by slaughtering my bloodline."
He walked down the length of the table, stopping beside Mara. He didn't touch her, but his presence was an impenetrable shield at her back.
"Mario believes this woman should be bought off," Salvatore continued, glancing at the fat, red-faced elder down the table. "He believes loyalty, courage, and motherly instinct have a market price. He believes a check can repay the woman who faced down two armed hitmen with an iron bar to shield my daughter."
Mario swallowed hard, looking down at his water glass.
"No amount of paper repays a debt of blood," Salvatore said. "Gianna has no mother. And in this city, a child without a guardian of absolute iron will not survive to see her tenth birthday."
Salvatore turned to Mara. In front of the entire ruling council of the American mafia, he pulled a document from the folder on the table.
"This is a legal decree of co-guardianship," Salvatore said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Mara Quill is now the legal, irrevocable mother and guardian of Gianna Moretti. In the event of my death, every asset, every account, every territory, and the full military might of the Moretti syndicate falls under her sole trusteeship until Gianna comes of age."
A collective, choked gasp swept around the table.
"Salvatore, you can't be serious!" another capo sputtered, rising halfway. "She's an outsider! She has no bloodline!"
"She shed blood for this child," Salvatore roared, slamming his fist onto the table with a sound like a grenade. "Which is more than any of you cowards did while Cassian was stealing her from under your noses!"
He turned back to Mara, his gaze softening into something earnest, searching, and surprisingly vulnerable.
"You spent your life being thrown away by families who didn't want you, Mara," Salvatore said quietly, loud enough only for her and the front row to hear. "You lived in basements because this city is cold. I am offering you an empire. I am offering you a fortress. Not as a servant. Not as a mistress. But as the sovereign lady of this house, and the mother of my child."
He held out a platinum fountain pen.
"Stay with us. Protect her. And I will burn the world before I let anyone harm either of you again."
Mara stood paralyzed.
Her entire life, she had been a ghost. She had cleaned up the filth left behind by rich men who never learned her name. She had lived on the fringes of society, invisible, dispensable, waiting for the cold to take her.
She looked down at Gianna. The little girl reached up with both hands, grabbed the lapel of Mara’s blazer, and laughed—a bright, clear, bell-like sound that echoed through the terrifying room.
Mara looked at Salvatore Moretti. She saw a monster, yes. But she also saw an iron wall that would keep the wolves away forever.
She took the pen.

With a steady, deliberate hand, she signed her name beneath the seal of the lion and the dagger.
