Chapter 18 - The Sovereign's Proposal

The war room emptied as the captains dispersed to prepare their strike teams. The heavy iron doors shut, leaving Mara and Salvatore alone in the quiet subterranean chamber.

Salvatore stood by the display screens, watching the satellite feeds of the Queens rail yard. Mara walked up beside him, folding her arms.

"You're going with them tonight," she stated. It wasn't a question.

"I have to," Salvatore replied softly. "Corvi tried to murder you in front of the entire underworld. If I send only soldiers, the city thinks I hide behind my men. A Don must lead from the front, Mara. When Corvi dies, I must be the last thing his eyes see."

Mara looked down at her hands. "I know. Just... don't be reckless. Gianna needs her father."

"And you?" Salvatore asked, turning to face her fully. His voice was thick with an intensity that made the room feel suddenly smaller. "Do you need me, Mara?"

Mara met his gaze. The mask of cool composure she wore for the captains melted away, revealing the raw, passionate woman beneath. "You know I do, Salvatore. I’ve spent my whole life being completely alone. You gave me a family. You gave me safety. And you made me realize I am capable of loving someone without fear."

Salvatore reached into the pocket of his tactical trousers. He pulled out a small, worn velvet box.

Mara’s breath hitched.

"This belonged to my great-grandmother," Salvatore said, his deep voice carrying a solemn reverence. "She survived the Sicilian famine, fought alongside her husband against rival clans, and built our name from dirt. My father told me never to open this box unless I found a woman whose soul was forged from the same unyielding steel."

He opened the box. Resting on black silk was an antique platinum ring set with an emerald cut black diamond, surrounded by tiny, brilliant white gems that looked like stars orbiting a dark star.

"I didn't take you into this house to make you a nursemaid or a trophy," Salvatore said, his dark eyes boring into hers with ferocious devotion. "I want you beside me on the throne. I want you to bear my name, command my soldiers, and share my life until the day my heart stops beating."

He dropped to one knee before her—the Don of New York kneeling before the former maid who had saved his bloodline.

"Mara Bellandi... will you become Donna Moretti? Will you marry me?"

Tears gathered in Mara’s hazel eyes, shining in the harsh fluorescent lights of the war room, but they were tears of triumph, not sorrow. She had survived the gutter, the beatings, the cold, and the bullets, and here, at the gates of war, the king was pledging his eternity to her.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice steady and resolute. "Yes, Salvatore. A thousand times yes."

May you like

Salvatore stood, slipped the heavy black diamond onto her left ring finger, and pulled her into a crushing, triumphant embrace. As their lips met in a fierce promise, the alarm on the control panel began to chime, signaling that the strike teams were assembled and ready for war.
