Chapter 6 - A Mother by Blood and Fire

The sound was not a gunshot; it was a thunderclap.

The window frame disintegrated into flying splinters and glass. The gunman was lifted off his feet by three massive impacts to his torso, thrown back against the overturned table, and died before he hit the linoleum.

Through the pulverized window and the splintered front doorway, men poured into the room like specters of death. Tactical gear, suppressed rifles, absolute efficiency. In three seconds, the second attacker was pinned to the floor, disarmed, and rendered unconscious with a single blow from a rifle butt.

Then the room parted.

Salvatore Moretti walked through the ruin of the doorway.

He had removed his overcoat. His sleeves were rolled up over forearms corded with muscle and ink. In his right hand, he held a heavy chrome semi-automatic pistol, the barrel smoking faintly in the cold draft.

His eyes swept over the blood, the shattered furniture, the dead men.

Then his eyes landed on the corner.

Mara was sitting on the floor, her back pressed against the peeling wallpaper. Her lip was split, bleeding heavily down her chin. A deep bruise was already blooming purple across her cheek. Her clothes were torn, soaked in tea and rain.

Tucked tight against her chest, wrapped beneath her threadbare sweater, was Gianna.

The baby was sobbing, small hiccups wracking her little frame, but she was completely unharmed. Her tiny fingers were woven into the collar of Mara’s torn shirt, holding on as if Mara were the only solid thing in an unraveling universe.

Salvatore stood frozen. The terrifying, inhuman Don of New York seemed to lose his breath entirely.

Slowly, deliberately, he lowered his weapon and passed it to Luca without taking his eyes off the corner.

He walked toward them, each step slow, hesitant, unlike anything his men had ever seen from him. He sank down to his knees on the filthy, wet linoleum, right in front of Mara.

"Gianna," Salvatore whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he had kept locked behind steel for a lifetime.

He reached his large, scarred hand out toward his daughter.

Gianna shrieked, flinching away from the unfamiliar touch, burying her wet face even deeper into the hollow of Mara’s neck.

Salvatore’s hand hovered in the air, trembling slightly. His jaw clenched, a raw, unbearable pain flashing in his eyes.

Mara looked at the mafia kingpin. She saw past the blood, past the legend, past the terror. She saw a father who was bleeding inside.

"Shh," Mara whispered, her hand gently stroking the baby’s dark curls. "It's okay, little bird. It's okay. Look who's here."

She gently peeled Gianna away from her neck, cradling the back of her head, and brought the baby’s tear-stained face toward Salvatore. Mara took Salvatore’s trembling, scarred hand and placed it gently against Gianna’s soft cheek.

"She was cold," Mara said quietly, her voice trembling with exhaustion. "I had to keep her warm."

Gianna blinked through her tears. She smelled the faint scent of cedarwood on Salvatore’s hand—a scent from before the nightmare. Her crying subsided into small, shuddering sniffs. Her tiny hand reached out and touched his thumb.

A single tear cut through the grime on Salvatore Moretti’s face.

He pulled his daughter against his chest, wrapping his massive arms around her, burying his face in her curls. For a long, silent minute, the feared master of the underworld simply wept.

When he looked back up at Mara, the vulnerability was gone, replaced by an intensity so fierce it felt like physical heat.

"You saved her," he said.

"Anyone would have," Mara whispered.

"No," Salvatore replied, his voice dropping low and grave. "Everyone else walked past that dumpster. Everyone else looked away. You bled for her."

He looked at Luca.

"Bring the car. And bring her. She doesn't leave my sight again."
