Chapter 8 - The Velvet Cage

For three days, Mara lived in a world made of silk, gold, and armed sentries.

She had been given an entire guest wing on the third floor of the manor—three rooms with vaulted ceilings, a fireplace that burned fragrant birch logs day and night, and a closet filled with clothes tailored to her exact measurements.

Every time she tried to do something herself—wash a dish, fold a blanket, clean a spill—a quiet, deferential maid would appear and take it from her hands with a polite, terrified bow. It drove Mara insane. She was a woman whose hands had never known rest; idleness felt like an impending disaster.

The only thing that kept her anchored was Gianna.

The baby refused to eat from anyone else. When the high-priced pediatric nurses tried to feed her, Gianna screamed until her face turned purple. But the moment Mara sat on the floor with the bottle, Gianna drank hungrily, her hazel eyes locked onto Mara’s face with fierce devotion.

On the third evening, a knock came at the heavy oak door.

Luca entered, holding a black leather folder. He bowed his head respectfully—a gesture that made Mara deeply uncomfortable coming from a grown man who looked like an executioner.

"Signorina Quill," Luca said. "The Don requests your presence in the Great Hall. The Council of Capos has convened."

Mara frowned. "Why do I need to be there?"

"The Don has settled the debt of the betrayal," Luca said, his voice flat. "Cassian is dead. His faction has been erased. Now, the future of the family must be established."

Mara picked up Gianna, wrapping the child in a soft lavender blanket. "I'm not leaving her with strangers."

"The Don expects nothing less," Luca replied.

They walked down the sweeping marble staircase toward the grand dining hall on the ground floor. Through the heavy iron-reinforced doors, Mara could hear the low, angry rumble of raised voices.

"...it is unprecedented, Salvatore!" an older man’s gravelly voice shouted. "She is a nobody! A maid from the gutter! You give her a million dollars, you put her on a plane to Europe, and you find a suitable wife from the Falcone family to raise the child!"

"The Falcone family sold our transport codes to Cassian three weeks ago, Mario," Salvatore’s voice cut through the room like a frozen blade. "If you mention their name in this house again, I will have your tongue nailed to the table."

Silence fell over the room.

Luca pushed the double doors open.
