Chapter 11 - Shadows in the Garden

The gentle breeze rustling through the estate’s cypress trees brought with it the scent of blooming jasmine, but beneath the tranquility, the air remained laced with the subtle iron scent of authority. Mara looked down at Gianna, who had now fallen asleep on her lap, small hands curled tightly into the soft folds of Mara’s ivory linen dress.

"The alley is really gone?" Mara asked softly, her gaze lifting to Salvatore’s face.

"It is," Salvatore replied, his rough, calloused fingers resting warm and steady against her shoulder. "The concrete was poured yesterday. By next spring, there will be rosebushes and apple trees where the trash bins once sat. No one will ever associate that ground with coldness or hunger again."

Mara felt a tightening in her chest—a sudden, overwhelming ache of gratitude that threatened to unseat her usual composure. Just months ago, she was an invisible ghost scrubbing marble floors at three in the morning, surviving on day-old bread and hiding from the predatory gaze of managers. Now, the man who ruled New York’s underworld had purchased an entire city block simply to erase the ghost of her misery.

"You didn't have to do that," she murmured.

"I did," he said, his voice dropping an octave, resonant and unwavering. "A king does not leave monuments to his queen's suffering standing in the open."

Mara’s breath hitched at the word *queen*. Salvatore did not use words lightly. Every syllable he uttered was an edict backed by gunpowder and cold steel. Before she could answer, the crunch of gravel echoed across the courtyard.

Luca appeared at the edge of the stone steps. His posture was rigid, his usual relaxed smirk replaced by the tight-jawed grimace of an enforcer carrying bad news. He waited at a respectful distance, catching Salvatore’s eye.

Salvatore’s expression shifted instantly. The gentle father and tender protector vanished behind the impassive, terrifying mask of the Don. He lifted his hand from Mara’s shoulder, though his touch lingered for a fraction of a second in reassurance.

"Take Gianna inside, Mara," Salvatore instructed quietly. "Elena has prepared lunch."

Mara stood smoothly, cradling the sleeping toddler against her chest. She looked at Luca, noting the faint bulge of a shoulder holster beneath his dark jacket and the tension in his shoulders. "Is it trouble?" she asked plainly. She was no longer a timid girl to be kept in the dark; she had faced bullets in a derelict warehouse to keep Gianna alive.

Salvatore looked at her, his dark eyes flashing with respect. "Nothing we cannot handle. But the Five Families have noticed that the Moretti syndicate is investing millions into foster homes instead of smuggling docks. The vultures are curious."

"Curiosity killed the cat, Salvatore," Mara said quietly, stepping toward the double glass doors.

A faint, deadly smirk touched Salvatore's lips. "And in this city, Mara, I am the tiger."

As she entered the safety of the mansion, she glanced back through the arched glass. Luca was handing Salvatore a black leather dossier, his voice low and urgent. Even from afar, Mara could see the lethal storm gathering in Salvatore Moretti’s eyes. Peace, it seemed, was only ever a temporary truce in this world.
