Chapter 8 - The Collapse of the Empire

With Daniel sitting in a county jail cell awaiting a fifty-thousand-dollar bail that his family could not afford, Margaret and Vanessa’s united front completely shattered.
Without Daniel's income or my financial support, they were forced to check out of their hotel room and move into a small, dilapidated one-bedroom motel on the highway edge of town.
On Friday morning, I sat in Arthur Sterling’s grand corner office, reviewing the final settlement proposal.
"Daniel's criminal defense attorney called me an hour ago," Arthur reported, sliding a paper across the desk. "He says Daniel is willing to plead guilty to a reduced charge of attempted financial fraud if you agree to drop the civil larceny lawsuit regarding the eighty-five thousand dollars."
"What are his terms for the divorce?" I asked.
"He wants nothing," Arthur smiled widely. "He is signing over all claims to joint property, waiving spousal support, relinquishing his rights to any business equity in Bennett-Hart Solutions, and agreeing to a permanent non-disclosure agreement."
"And the eighty-five thousand dollars?" I inquired.
"We have attached a lien against his personal inheritance trust from his late father," Arthur explained. "You will recover every single cent, plus legal interest, within sixty days."
"Then accept the plea deal, Arthur," I said, picking up my pen and signing the final divorce decree papers. "I don't want him in prison for ten years. I just want him completely out of my life."
At 2:00 PM that same afternoon, Margaret Bennett officially posted her court-ordered public apology on Facebook.
Sitting in her cheap motel room, looking exhausted, broken, and completely defeated without her fine silk robes or heavy makeup, she read from a court-approved script:
"I, Margaret Bennett, hereby apologize unreservedly to Claire Bennett. My previous statements regarding her were entirely false and malicious. Claire Bennett never abused me, never stole from us, and was a generous host. The house belongs entirely to her, and my son Daniel Bennett attempted to illegally mortgage her property without her knowledge. I deeply regret my actions."
The video comment section, which had previously been filled with hate messages directed at me, instantly turned into a barrage of mockery and disgust aimed at Margaret and Vanessa.

“What a terrible family!” one top comment read. “She tried to ruin her daughter-in-law's life and got caught red-handed!” another posted. “Claire Bennett is a queen for kicking these grifters out!”
By Friday evening, the story had been picked up by the local business news, portraying the incident as a cautionary tale of family financial fraud and praising my firm's swift legal response.
