Chapter 6 - The In-Laws Strike Back

By Wednesday afternoon, the news of our impending divorce and the frozen bank accounts had sent shockwaves through Daniel’s extended family.

Instead of backing down, Margaret decided to launch a public smear campaign.

At 2:00 PM, my personal assistant Sarah walked into my office, her face pale as she held up her tablet screen.

"Claire... you need to see this," Sarah said nervously.

On the screen was a live stream video posted to Facebook by Margaret Bennett. She was sitting in a crowded local diner, flanked by Vanessa and Daniel. Margaret was wearing a neck brace, her hair intentionally disheveled, weeping dramatically into a handkerchief.

The video title read: RICH CORPORATE WIFE THROWS ELDERLY SICK MOTHER-IN-LAW INTO THE STREET DURING HEAVY RAIN!

"She kicked us out!" Margaret sobbed into the camera, her voice amplified for the thousands of viewers watching the stream. "My son worked eighteen hours a day to build her business! He bought her a four-million-dollar mansion! And the moment I got sick, she threw water on me, called the police, and locked us out of our own home! She froze our bank accounts! We are starving!"

Vanessa stepped into the camera frame, wiping tears from her eyes. "Claire Bennett is a cruel, sociopathic abuser! She forced my mother to beg for water! She stole my brother's life savings! Please share this video everywhere so people know the truth about Bennett-Hart Solutions!"

The video already had fifty thousand views, twelve thousand shares, and hundreds of angry comments calling for a boycott of my consulting firm.

"Should I call our public relations firm to issue a statement?" Sarah asked, her hands shaking slightly.

"No," I said, standing up from my desk and picking up my coat. "Public relations statements are for people who have something to hide. Order a company car for 3:00 PM. We are going to the County Courthouse."

"The courthouse?" Sarah asked, confused. "Why?"

"Because Margaret just committed defamation, slander per se, and public extortion on a recorded live stream," I replied, smiling coldly. "And Arthur Sterling has been waiting for them to make a move like this all week."

At 3:30 PM, we arrived at the County Courthouse, where Arthur Sterling was already waiting for us outside Courtroom 4.

With us was Detective Marcus Brody from the Financial Crimes Unit, holding a certified thick folder containing the forensic digital report of Daniel's IP address, the video footage from my living room, and the signed prenuptial agreement.

"Are you ready, Claire?" Arthur asked, adjusting his silver tie.

"More than ready, Arthur," I said.

Ten minutes later, the judge—Honorable Judge Beatrice Vance—entered the courtroom.

Through a series of emergency motions filed by Arthur Sterling, Judge Vance had granted an expedited hearing regarding the emergency freeze on spousal assets and an immediate injunction against public harassment.

Sitting across the courtroom at the defense table were Daniel, Margaret, and Vanessa, accompanied by a cheap, low-cost legal aid attorney Daniel had managed to hire with borrowed money.

Margaret was still wearing her fake neck brace, sitting in a wheelchair she had rented for the occasion, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.

When Judge Vance took her seat on the bench, she looked down at the defense table with an expression of sharp disdain.

"Mr. Bennett," Judge Vance spoke, her voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. "Before we address the asset freeze motion, I have reviewed the video evidence submitted by the petitioner, Ms. Claire Bennett."

Judge Vance tapped a button on her monitor, and the living room security footage from Sunday evening played on the large screens mounted on the courtroom walls.

The entire courtroom watched in high-definition clarity as Margaret pointed at the floor, ordered me to kneel, and laughed with Vanessa. They watched as I threw the water, and they heard Daniel clearly say: "I was going to tell you about the HELOC loan tonight, Claire! We need the money for Vanessa's business!"

Margaret’s face turned from pale white to bright, fiery red. Vanessa shrank into her chair, covering her face with her hands.

"Furthermore," Judge Vance continued, her tone turning icy, "I have reviewed the Facebook live stream broadcast by Mrs. Margaret Bennett two hours ago, in which she claimed Mr. Bennett bought the home and that Ms. Bennett abused her."

Judge Vance slammed her gavel down hard against the wooden block.

"This court finds Mrs. Margaret Bennett and Ms. Vanessa Bennett in direct civil contempt for filing false statements, public defamation, and attempting to contaminate the judicial process!" Judge Vance declared firmly.
