Chapter 5 - The Morning After

At 7:30 AM on Monday morning, the sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my private office on the thirty-second floor of the downtown financial tower.
I sat at my mahogany desk wearing a sharp, tailored slate-gray suit, drinking a hot cup of black coffee while reviewing the corporate quarterly balance sheets for my consulting firm, Bennett-Hart Solutions.
My personal secretary, Sarah, knocked gently on the glass door frame.
"Claire?" Sarah asked softly. "Your 8:00 AM appointment is here. But... your husband is also downstairs in the lobby. He's been trying to get up the executive elevator since 6:30 AM."
"Is building security keeping him on the ground floor?" I asked, taking a slow sip of my coffee.
"Yes," Sarah nodded. "He doesn't have a visitor badge, and Security Chief Vance told him he'd be removed from the property if he kept causing a scene."
"Good," I said. "Keep him down there. Who is my 8:00 AM appointment?"
"Mr. Arthur Sterling," Sarah replied, stepping aside to reveal an elderly man wearing a bespoke charcoal suit, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.
Arthur Sterling was the senior founding partner of Sterling, Vance & Associates—the premier family law and corporate litigation firm in the state. He was also a long-time personal friend of my late grandfather.
"Arthur," I said, standing up to shake his hand. "Thank you for coming on such short notice."
"Nonsense, my dear," Arthur smiled, setting his leather briefcase on my desk and taking a seat. "When I saw the emergency security files and bank records you sent over at 2:00 AM, I canceled my entire morning schedule. That was quite a Sunday evening you had."
"It was long overdue," I admitted, sitting back down.
Arthur pulled a thick folder from his briefcase, laying out several legal documents across the desk.
"I have already drafted the emergency divorce petition under the grounds of financial fraud, irretrievable breakdown, and breach of fiduciary spousal duty," Arthur explained, tapping the top page. "Furthermore, my team filed a freeze order on all joint bank accounts at 6:00 AM today."
"How much was in the joint account?" I asked.
Arthur checked his notes. "Approximately forty-two thousand dollars. However, I noticed that Daniel attempted three online wire transfers between 11:00 PM last night and 3:00 AM this morning, trying to move fifteen thousand dollars to his sister Vanessa's account."
I smiled faintly. "Did the wires go through?"
"No," Arthur chuckled softly. "Our emergency freeze took effect at midnight. The funds are completely locked. Daniel currently has access to his personal checking account, which contains... three hundred and twelve dollars."
Before I could respond, my desk phone buzzed. I pressed the speaker button.
"Claire," Security Chief Vance's voice boomed through the speaker. "Mr. Bennett is getting aggressive in the lobby. He's shouting that you're stealing his money and refusing to let him see his wife. Should I call the city police?"
I looked at Arthur, who offered a small, decisive nod.
"Put him on the line, Vance," I instructed.
A second later, Daniel's frantic, ragged voice came through the speaker.
"Claire! Claire, pick up!" Daniel screamed over the background noise of the busy lobby. "What did you do to my cards?! I tried to pay for Mom's hotel room this morning and my card was declined! I tried to transfer money to Vanessa and the bank said my accounts are frozen! You can't do this!"
"Daniel," I said, my voice cool, professional, and loud enough for everyone standing near Vance's desk to hear. "You attempted to fraudulently mortgage my real estate for four hundred thousand dollars yesterday. You are under active federal financial investigation. Did you honestly believe your credit cards would still work today?"
"Claire, please!" Daniel wept, his arrogance completely gone, replaced by frantic desperation. "Mom is sitting in a cheap motel room with wet hair! Vanessa is throwing up from stress! We don't have money for food! Just release ten thousand dollars from the joint account so I can pay for their stay!"
"That money is frozen pending the divorce division, Daniel," I stated clearly. "If your mother and sister need food, I suggest Vanessa's husband Greg gets a job. Or your mother can sell the luxury silk robes I bought her last Christmas."
"You heartless monster!" Daniel roared through the speaker. "I'm your husband!"
"Not for much longer, Daniel," I said. "Arthur Sterling is serving your divorce papers at 10:00 AM today. Have your lawyer call him. Good day."
I signaled Chief Vance to disconnect the line. The speaker went dead.

I looked across the desk at Arthur, who was smiling warmly at me.
"You handled that with remarkable grace, Claire," Arthur said. "Now, shall we discuss the criminal charges regarding the forged HELOC application?"
