Chapter 6 - The Total Stripping

With Vanessa gone, the study fell into a cold, suffocating quiet once again.

Adrian remained on his knees, staring blankly at the Persian rug, his mind completely broken by the speed at which his reality had been dismantled.

My father turned to the local police chief who was standing near the door.

"Chief," my father said smoothly. "My daughter has just been subjected to severe domestic assault resulting in physical injury. We have full medical documentation, video security footage from the hallway, and the weapon used sitting on that table."

The police chief stepped forward, his expression grave as he looked at the studded leather belt on the glass coffee table.

"Adrian Mercer," the chief said, pulling his handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for aggravated felony assault and domestic battery."

"No... wait! Please!" Adrian cried out as the officer yanked his arms behind his back. "Claire, please tell them! Tell them it was a mistake! I loved you! I was out of my mind with stress! Please, Claire! Don't let them take me to jail!"

He reached out toward me, his hands trembling in the steel cuffs, his eyes pleading with the desperation of a drowning man.

"You loved me?" I asked, stepping right up to him, looking down into his tear-filled eyes. "When you swung that belt the first time, did you love me? When I was on my knees bleeding and you raised it for the twentieth time, did you love me?"

Adrian couldn't answer. He lowered his head, sobbing uncontrollably.

"You didn't love me, Adrian," I said softly. "You loved the prestige of having a quiet, obedient wife who cooked your dinners while you played the big, powerful CEO. You thought I was weak because I was kind."

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, holding a thick stack of legal documents.

"Mr. Mercer," Arthur said with clinical precision. "Before you are taken to the county holding facility, you need to sign these immediate corporate release forms and the emergency divorce petition."

"What... what is this?" Adrian wept, his voice hollow.

"Under the terms of this emergency petition," Arthur explained, "you are surrendering all claims to any joint assets, forfeiting all severance rights from Mercer Dynamics, and transferring your remaining personal shares to Claire Ellison as restitution for physical and emotional damages."

"And if I don't sign?" Adrian choked out.

"If you don't sign," Arthur smiled coldly, "we will file civil litigation in federal court tomorrow morning seeking seventy-five million dollars in damages. We will attach your personal bank accounts, your trust funds, your inheritance, and your clothes. You will spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary while being utterly bankrupt."

Adrian looked at my father, whose icy gaze offered zero room for negotiation. He looked at me, finding only cold, unyielding stone where a forgiving wife used to be.

"Give me the pen," Adrian whispered, his spirit completely broken.

With his hands cuffed behind him, the officer held him steady as Arthur guided his hand to sign the bottom of each page.

With a few strokes of ink, Adrian Mercer relinquished his company, his home, his fortune, and his freedom.
