Chapter 5 - The Snake Unmasked

Vanessa, realizing that the ship was not just sinking but being incinerated, slowly tried to edge toward the study's side exit, keeping her back against the bookshelves.
"Where do you think you're going, Ms. Vale?" I asked, looking up as the medic applied a clean white bandage to my palm.
Vanessa froze, her face pale as ash. "Claire... please... I was just an employee! I was only following Adrian's instructions! He forced me to frame you! He told me he'd fire me if I didn't print those forged emails!"
"YOU LIAR!" Adrian roared, turning his tear-stained, bloodshot eyes toward her from the floor. "You brought me those files! You told me she was selling our trade secrets to Apex Global! You set this entire thing up!"
"Because you wanted to believe it, Adrian!" Vanessa screamed back, abandoning all pretense of innocence. "You wanted an excuse to kick her out so you could marry me and use my contacts to get the Apex contract! You were greedy, arrogant, and foolish!"
"Enough," Arthur Sterling, my father's lawyer, interrupted firmly. He pulled a yellow legal pad from his briefcase and looked at Vanessa.
"Ms. Vale," Arthur said, his voice laced with cold professional contempt. "Do you truly believe that Ellison Global didn't investigate your background before we arrived here tonight?"
Vanessa swallowed hard, her hand trembling against the bookshelf. "What... what do you mean?"
"Your real name is Vanessa Jenkins," Arthur stated clearly, reading from a file on his tablet. "You are not an 'executive consultant'. You are a professional corporate fraudster who has been under active investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for corporate extortion and trade secret theft in three different states."
Adrian gasped, staring at her in sheer horror. "What?!"
"Three years ago," Arthur continued, "you pulled the exact same scheme on a medical tech CEO in Chicago, draining his personal accounts before framing his business partner. You infiltrated Mercer Dynamics six months ago specifically to engineer a buyout fraud."
Arthur clicked his tablet screen and held it up for Adrian to see.
"The server logs prove that the real leak of Mercer Dynamics' algorithms didn't go to an external competitor," Arthur said. "They were transferred directly to a private offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under Vale Holdings LLC—a shell company controlled entirely by Vanessa Jenkins."
Adrian stared at the screen, then looked at Vanessa, his face twisting into a mask of complete, utter devastation.
He had destroyed his marriage, beaten his wife, and ruined his entire life for a woman who was systematically robbing him blind.
"You..." Adrian whispered to Vanessa, his voice shaking with pure venom. "You destroyed me..."
"She didn't destroy you, Adrian," I said, standing up from the armchair with my hand neatly bandaged. "Your own ego destroyed you. Vanessa just provided the rope, and you willingly hung yourself with it."
Right on cue, two uniformed officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation stepped through the study doors, followed by three local police officers.

"Vanessa Jenkins," the lead FBI agent said, stepping forward with silver handcuffs drawn. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate espionage, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent."
Vanessa shrieked as the cold steel cuffed her wrists behind her back, her designer facade completely dissolving into pathetic, hysterical weeping as she was dragged out of the mansion in my stolen robe.
