Chapter 2 - The Five-Minute Countdown

The antique grandfather clock in the corner of the study ticked with heavy, agonizing precision.

Adrian tossed the leather belt onto the glass coffee table with a hollow, careless thud. He walked over to the silver bar cart, unbuttoned his cuffs, and poured two fingers of crystal scotch over a single sphere of ice.

"Your father," Adrian sneered, swirling the amber liquid before taking a slow, arrogant sip. "Your father runs a mid-tier regional logistics company in Ohio, Claire. What is he going to do? Cancel my office supplies shipment?"

Vanessa glided over to his side, her bare feet sinking into the plush Persian rug. She wrapped her manicured arms around his waist, resting her chin on his shoulder while casting a triumphant, mocking smirk in my direction.

"She's just bluffing, darling," Vanessa purred softly, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy. "It's a coping mechanism. Poor Claire can't accept that her quiet, comfortable little life in this mansion is over. When the police come to escort her out tomorrow morning for corporate espionage, maybe her father can pay her bail."

I didn't answer them. I stood near the marble desk, holding a white linen napkin against the deep, bleeding gash across my left palm where I had caught the studded leather buckle. The sharp pain radiated up my forearm, but it served as an anchor—a stark, icy reminder of the illusion I had willingly lived in for three years.

I looked down at my watch.

Four minutes left.

"You know, Claire," Adrian continued, walking toward me until he was standing just beyond arm's reach, his eyes cold and devoid of any human warmth. "I actually felt sorry for you at first. I thought you were just naive. But stealing Mercer Dynamics' core encryption algorithms to sell to our competitors? That isn't just betrayal. That's financial treason."

"I didn't touch your server, Adrian," I said, my voice steady, low, and devoid of tremor. "If you had spent five minutes having an independent forensic auditor look at those IP headers instead of blindly taking printed papers from a woman you met at a hotel lounge six months ago, you would have seen the routing origin."

Vanessa’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. Her fingers tightened imperceptibly against Adrian's silk shirt.

"Don't listen to her, Adrian," Vanessa interjected quickly, her tone sharpening. "She's trying to manipulate you. The digital signatures on those documents match her personal laptop's MAC address!"

"Because she duplicated my drive while I was taking a shower three nights ago," I replied smoothly, keeping my eyes fixed on Adrian. "Check your primary database logs right now. If the breach was sent from my laptop, why was the admin passkey used to bypass the firewall registered under Vanessa Vale's executive credentials?"

Adrian frowned slightly, turning his head toward Vanessa. "Vanessa? Is that true?"

"Of course not!" Vanessa gasped, pulling back with a look of wounded innocence. "Adrian! Are you seriously questioning me right now?! After everything I've done to secure the Apex Global venture for you?!"

Three minutes left.

Before Adrian could answer, his personal smartphone on the desk began to vibrate violently against the polished wood.

He glanced at the screen casually, expecting a routine call from his secretary or a board member. But when he saw the caller ID, his brow furrowed in confusion.

"It's Marcus Vance," Adrian muttered, pressing the speaker button. "The managing director of Global Capital Bank."

He cleared his throat, instant professionalism slipping into his tone. "Marcus! Good evening. I was just about to email you regarding the final loan guarantees for—"

"Adrian, shut your mouth and listen to me," Marcus Vance interrupted, his voice laced with a raw, panicked urgency that made the ambient noise in the room evaporate. "Where are you right now?"

Adrian blinked, taken aback. "I'm at home. What's going on?"

"We are freezing Mercer Dynamics' entire corporate credit facility," Marcus stated bluntly. "Effective sixty seconds ago. Every business checking account, every payroll bridge loan, and every revolving line of credit issued to your firm has been locked."

Adrian’s face drained of color. "What?! Marcus, you can't do that! We have a signed syndicate agreement! Payroll for twelve hundred employees is scheduled for transfer at midnight!"

"I don't give a damn about your payroll, Adrian!" Marcus barked through the speaker. "I just received a direct executive order from the Chairman of the International Federal Oversight Board. If I don't freeze your assets immediately, Global Capital's banking charter will be revoked by morning!"

"Who... who gave that order?!" Adrian stammered, his fingers shaking as he gripped the edge of the desk.

"Edward Ellison," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with sheer terror. "The patriarch of the Ellison Global Conglomerate. He personally called our chief executive officer thirty seconds ago."

Marcus took a sharp breath before asking the question that shattered Adrian's world into microscopic pieces.

"Adrian... why the hell did Edward Ellison just declare total economic war on your company?"
