Chapter 9 - The Diamond and the Scar

Adelaide’s hands trembled slightly as she opened the black velvet box.

Resting inside was not a massive, flashy diamond designed to show off wealth—like the ones Evelyn had worn or Chloe had lusted after. It was an exquisite, antique-cut black diamond, set in a delicate, hand-carved platinum band shaped like intertwining vine leaves.

It was rare, striking, unconventional, and impossibly beautiful.

"When I stood in my study two months ago," Mateo said, his voice dropping into that deep, resonant tone that resonated in her soul, "and watched you walk into my house expecting to be executed, I saw the strongest woman I had ever met. You came into my world with nothing, yet you carried more dignity than anyone I have ever known."

He reached out, taking the ring from the box, and looked down into her dark eyes.

"I didn't choose you to spite your father, Adelaide," Mateo confessed softly, his gaze holding hers with absolute truth. "I chose you because the moment I touched your face and looked into your eyes, I knew I would never want another woman at my side for the rest of my life."

Tears, warm and bright, filled Adelaide’s eyes, but for the first time in her life, they were tears of pure, unadulterated happiness.

"You don't care about the scar?" she whispered, the old, quiet fear making its final, faint whisper. "You don't care that I’m not what society expects?"

Mateo leaned down, and before taking her hand, he pressed his lips gently, reverently, directly onto the pale, jagged line running along her left cheek.

"Your scar is the mark of a survivor," Mateo murmured against her skin, his breath warm and steady. "It tells the world that life tried to break you, and failed. It is the most beautiful thing about you, Adelaide."

He took her left hand and slid the black diamond ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.

Adelaide stood up from her chair, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face into the firm, steady warmth of his chest. Mateo wrapped his strong arms tightly around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet, holding her as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.

"Yes," Adelaide whispered against his shoulder, her voice filled with quiet strength. "Yes, Mateo. Always yes."
