Chapter 7 - The Eviction of the Plastic Kings

The week following the fateful dinner at the Moretti estate brought a swift, merciless destruction to the world Rockford and Evelyn Jones had spent decades constructing.
With the decrypted files provided by Adelaide, Mateo’s legal team executed a series of emergency court orders across the city of Boston. By Tuesday morning, federal asset forfeiture warrants were served at the Jones Financial headquarters in the financial district.
Adelaide personally accompanied Mateo and a team of federal auditors to the high-rise office building where she had spent years working in dark, windowless back rooms.
As they walked through the glass-paneled lobby, employees who had once ignored Adelaide or pushed their tedious data entry work onto her desk stopped in their tracks, staring in shock. She walked at Mateo’s side, dressed in a sleek, tailored navy trousers suit, her head held high, flanked by two senior Moretti attorneys.
They reached the corner executive suite on the top floor.
Rockford was sitting behind his massive glass desk, surrounded by cardboard boxes, frantically stuffing personal papers into a briefcase. His tie was undone, his hair disheveled, looking like a man whose world had collapsed around him in a matter of hours.
When the heavy doors swung open and Adelaide stepped inside, Rockford froze.
"Adelaide..." he whispered, his voice hoarse. "Please. You have to talk to him. You're my daughter! You can't let him do this to us! They're seizing the house in Chestnut Hill! They're repossessing Evelyn’s cars!"
Adelaide walked slowly up to the desk she had spent six years trying to keep afloat. She looked down at her father—not with hatred, nor with vengeance, but with a cold, absolute clarity.
"You didn't treat me as a daughter when you stood in that drawing room and let Evelyn call me a nameless maid, Rock," she said, using his first name for the first time in her life. "You treated me as a transactional line item. And now, the balance has been settled."
She placed a formal document on the glass desk in front of him.
"This is an eviction notice for the Chestnut Hill estate," Adelaide stated calmly. "You, Evelyn, and Chloe have twenty-four hours to vacate the premises. You are permitted to take your personal clothing. All jewelry, vehicles, art collections, and bank accounts purchased or maintained with Jones Financial capital have been placed under federal receivership pending criminal trial for corporate fraud."
Rockford looked at the paper, then up at his daughter, tears of genuine panic filling his eyes. "Where are we supposed to go? We have nothing!"
"You have what you gave me when you put me in that car," Adelaide replied softly. "An opportunity to start over without a dime."
She turned on her heel and walked out of the executive suite, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. Mateo was standing in the doorway, waiting for her. As she reached him, he offered her his arm, a subtle, proud smile touching his lips.
"How does it feel?" Mateo asked softly as they walked toward the private executive elevator.

Adelaide took a deep breath, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight that had rested on her shoulders since she was nine years old finally vanish completely.
"It feels like freedom," she said.
