Chapter 5 - The Dinner of Reckoning

The grand dining room of the Moretti estate was an exercise in imposing elegance. A forty-foot polished mahogany table stretched beneath three massive crystal chandeliers, set with sterling silver, fine porcelain, and tall black candles that cast flickering, dramatic shadows across the dark oak walls.
At the far end of the table sat Rockford, Evelyn, and Chloe Jones.
All three of them looked thoroughly uncomfortable, fidgeting in their carved leather chairs under the watchful, silent eyes of four armed Moretti security guards standing motionless against the perimeter walls.
Rockford was sweating profusely, wiping his forehead with a cloth handkerchief, while Evelyn nervously adjusted a heavy diamond necklace—a piece purchased with stolen Jones Financial funds just two months prior. Chloe sat with her arms crossed, her face tight with a mix of fear and petulant annoyance.
"This is ridiculous," Chloe hissed under her breath to her mother. "We've been sitting here for fifteen minutes. Why hasn't he come out yet? He’s playing mind games."
"Quiet, Chloe," Rockford snapped nervously, his voice shaking. "He holds fifteen million of our debt. If he wants us to sit here, we sit here."
"He probably brought Adelaide out to humiliate us," Evelyn muttered, leaning in toward her husband. "Just remember the plan, Rock. Tell him the girl is worthless to us, but offer him twenty percent equity in the commercial real estate portfolio to settle the balance. He’ll take it. Men like Mateo Moretti don't waste time on broken women."
At that exact moment, the heavy double oak doors at the head of the dining room swung open.
The head butler announced in a clear, echoing tone: "Mr. Mateo Moretti and Miss Adelaide Jones."
Rockford, Evelyn, and Chloe turned their heads toward the doorway, prepared to see a weeping, disheveled Adelaide being dragged into the room behind a terrifying mafia chief.
Instead, their jaws dropped in collective, stunned horror.
Mateo Moretti walked into the room, tall, dark, and utterly commanding. And walking beside him, her hand resting comfortably on his arm, was Adelaide.
She was radiant. Her emerald gown flowed around her with quiet luxury, her posture was regal, and her face—uncovered, proud, and stunningly striking—held an expression of calm, cold detachment that none of them had ever seen on her before.
The silence that fell over the dining room was absolute.
Chloe’s nail file dropped from her fingers, clattering loudly against her porcelain bread plate. Evelyn turned as pale as a sheet, her eyes bulging as she took in the custom Italian silk gown, the diamond earrings catching the chandelier light, and the complete absence of any fear in Adelaide’s dark eyes.
Rockford half-rose from his chair, his mouth hanging open. "Adelaide...?"
May you like
Adelaide did not smile. She did not flinch. She simply looked down the long table at the three people who had spent fifteen years treating her like garbage.
"Good evening, Father," Adelaide said, her voice smooth, clear, and perfectly poised. "Welcome to the Moretti estate."
