Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Ledgers

By midnight, the storm outside the Moretti compound had intensified, howling through the tall pine trees of the Berkshire Mountains. Inside the east wing of the estate, however, Adelaide was sitting in a plush leather armchair inside a vast private library, a high-performance laptop resting on her knees, glowing softly in the warm ambient light.
A thick cashmere sweater—provided by Mateo’s housekeeper, an elderly, sharp-eyed woman named Maria who had brought Adelaide a bowl of hot soup without asking a single degrading question—wrapped around her shoulders, replacing the damp olive dress she had arrived in.
Mateo sat across from her at a long oak table, a crystal glass of bourbon resting near his elbow, reviewing a series of printed bank statements Adelaide had generated over the last two hours.
"This account in Zurich," Mateo said, pointing a long, clean finger at a column of wire transfers dated four months prior. "It’s listed under Vance Global Exports. That's Evelyn's brother."
"It is," Adelaide said, her fingers flying over the keyboard as she decrypted another tier of hidden transaction logs. "Evelyn has been moving assets out of Jones Financial for over three years. She knew Rockford’s reckless trading habits would eventually catch up with him. She was preparing her exit strategy long before the Moretti loan was even finalized."
"And Chloe?" Mateo asked.
"Chloe isn't just a spoiled socialite with a shopping habit," Adelaide revealed, turning the laptop screen toward him. "Look at these secondary lines. Chloe holds three private accounts in the Cayman Islands. She’s been taking kickbacks from high-end fashion houses and jewelry vendors in exchange for routing Jones Financial corporate sponsorship funds into their marketing campaigns. She’s stolen nearly four million dollars on her own."
Mateo leaned back in his chair, taking a slow sip of his bourbon. A dark, cold smile touched his lips. "They sent you here thinking you were their refuse, yet you hold the leash to every single one of their throats."
"They assumed because I didn't speak up during dinner parties, I didn't see what they were doing," Adelaide murmured, her gaze dropping briefly to her laptop screen. "When my mother died in that crash, Rockford made it clear that my survival was an inconvenience. He told me more than once that if I wanted to stay under his roof, I had to earn my keep. So I earned it. I made myself indispensable to his business while remaining entirely invisible to his world."
Mateo set his glass down on the oak table with a firm, solid sound. He stood up, walked around the table, and stopped beside her armchair.
"You are not invisible here, Adelaide," he said, his voice dropping into that low, resonant tone that seemed to steady her pulse. "In this house, when you speak, people listen. When you enter a room, you do not stand behind doors."
Adelaide looked up at him, feeling a sudden heat rise in her cheeks that had nothing to do with the fire in the hearth. "Mateo... what happens when my father realizes I haven't been harmed? When he realizes I’m working with you?"
"Rockford Jones thinks you are currently locked in a cell in my basement, weeping and begging for his help," Mateo said, a dangerous glint appearing in his dark eyes. "Tomorrow morning at nine, he expects me to call him to negotiate the handover of Jones Financial’s voting shares in exchange for your safety."
"And what will you do?"
"I will call him," Mateo said, leaning down slightly so his face was level with hers. "I will tell him that the interest on his debt has doubled. And then I will invite him, Evelyn, and Chloe to a formal dinner here at the estate on Friday evening to discuss the 'terms' of your release."

Adelaide’s breath hitched. "A dinner?"
"A trap," Mateo corrected softly, a cold, lethal confidence radiating from him. "They laughed when they put you in that car, Adelaide. They laughed because they thought they were giving me a broken girl. On Friday night, we are going to sit at the head of my table and watch them realize that the girl they discarded now owns everything they have ever touched."
