Chapter 8 - The Confession in the Dark

The private art gallery was cold and silent, lined with ancient portraits of Vance ancestors holding swords and ledgers. Moonlight streamed through the vaulted skylights, casting dramatic shadows across the polished parquet floor.

Jessica was standing at the far end of the gallery, near an open stone balcony that overlooked the jagged cliffs and the roaring ocean below. Her chest heaved, her hair disheveled, the mask of the elegant debutante completely shredded.

"Stay away from me!" she screamed as Ethan and I entered, our footsteps echoing in the cavernous space.

"It's over, Jessica," I said, leaning on my cane, standing ten feet away from her. "The police have Marcus in custody. They have the wire transfers from your offshore account. They have the titanium multi-tool with your fingerprints etched in the grease."

Jessica stared at me, her chest heaving, and suddenly, she threw her head back and began to laugh.

It was the same laugh.

The blood-curdling, deranged laughter that had echoed over my broken body beneath the oak door. It bounced off the marble walls, hideous and manic.

"Over? You think this is over because you found a cheap mechanic?" Jessica sneered, her voice dropping into a guttural hiss. "You always were so pathetic, Clara! Father loved you more. Mother gave you all her attention while I had to beg for scraps! You were the 'responsible' one, the 'kind' one, the 'beautiful' one!"

She took two aggressive steps toward me, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at my chest.

"Yes! I loosened the hinge on that antique door! I spent two hours hidden in the maintenance closet loosening the steel bolts until that massive slab of wood was hanging by a single thread! And when you screamed under it, it was the sweetest sound I had ever heard in my entire life!"

I kept my face perfectly still, feeling the tiny microphone pinned beneath the collar of my dress burning against my skin. "And Julian? Did you push Ethan's brother?"

"Julian was a sanctimonious fool!" Jessica shrieked, her eyes rolling in psychotic ecstasy. "He wanted to take away my money! He wanted to report me to the authorities like I was some common street thief! So I took him out to the balcony, poured him another glass of drugged wine, and when he leaned over to look at the stars, I shoved him with both hands! He screamed all the way down to the rocks, Clara! Just like you screamed on that ballroom floor!"

She lunged forward, her fingers clawing like talons, aiming straight for my throat. "And now I'm going to finish what that door failed to do! I'll push you off this balcony and tell the world you slipped because of your stupid, broken leg!"

Before her nails could graze my skin, a hand like an iron vise clamped around Jessica's wrist.

Ethan twisted her arm behind her back with effortless, lethal precision, forcing her down onto her knees before me.

"Thank you, Jessica," Ethan whispered into her ear, his voice freezing the air in her lungs. "That was precisely the confession the grand jury required."
