Chapter 3 - The Cold Ward

Consciousness returned in brutal waves of antiseptic stenches, rhythmic electronic beeps, and a throbbing ache that pulsed from my hip down to my toes. When I forced my heavy eyelids open, the blinding white ceiling of St. Jude’s Intensive Care Unit swam into focus.

"She's waking up," a calm, deep voice murmured in the gloom.

I turned my head with great effort. Sitting in a rigid plastic armchair beside my bed was Ethan. He was still wearing his blood-spattered dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, dark stubble shadowing his chiseled jaw. It looked as though he hadn't slept for a single second.

"Ethan...?" My voice sounded like crushed gravel. "Where... what happened?"

"You survived six hours of reconstructive surgery," Ethan said quietly, leaning forward and offering me a paper cup of water with a bent straw. "The orthopedic surgeon managed to salvage the limb, but they had to install two titanium rods and seventeen titanium screws. You will walk again, Clara, but it will take months of intense rehabilitation."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as the phantom sensation of the falling oak door crashed through my memory. "Jessica... she laughed. She stood there and laughed at me."

"I know," Ethan replied, his expression hardening into stone. "I heard her."

"Why are you here?" I whispered, swallowing down the bitter lump in my throat. "You're her fiancé. You should be managing the press. The society pages must be having a field day with the disaster at the engagement gala."

"The engagement is a legal fiction that will end precisely when I decide it ends," Ethan said coldly. He leaned in closer, his dark eyes burning with an intense, long-buried fire. "Clara, I need you to listen to me very carefully. Did you choose to stand near that door last night?"

I furrowed my brow, trying to piece together the fractured memories. "No. Jessica texted me twenty minutes before the toast. She said she had left our late mother’s pearl necklace in the side vestibule and begged me to retrieve it for her before the photographs. She claimed her heel was broken and she couldn't walk across the gravel courtyard."

"A calculated decoy," Ethan muttered, his jaw clenching. "She knew the structural layout of that doorway. The antique door was decommissioned last month because the counterbalance weights were unstable. The venue managers had marked it as off-limits."

"How could she do this?" I sobbed, clutching the hospital blanket. "I knew she hated me. Ever since our parents died and left the family trust split evenly between us, she treated me like a parasite. But to crush my leg... to maim me..."

"Because maiming you leaves you dependent, broken, and easily manipulated," Ethan revealed, pulling a leather-bound dossier from his briefcase beside the chair. "Four years ago, my younger brother Julian was engaged to a woman. They traveled to Lake Como. One evening, Julian supposedly leaned against a rotten wooden railing on an overlook and fell eighty feet into the rocky gorge below."

My heart stopped. "Julian... your brother died in an accident?"

"That is what the Italian police concluded," Ethan said, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "The only witness on that balcony was his companion. A woman who claimed she tried to grab his hand, a woman who wept hysterically for the cameras and then inherited Julian's offshore venture portfolio three months later."

Ethan opened the folder, revealing a grainy photograph of a sun-drenched Italian terrace. Standing next to a handsome young man was Jessica, her smile radiant, her eyes devoid of any real light.

"Jessica was Julian's companion?" I gasped in horror. "She never told anyone in our family that she knew your brother!"

"She changed her legal middle name and altered her digital footprint before returning to the States," Ethan said, slamming the file shut. "I didn't propose to Jessica out of love, Clara. I proposed to her because I spent three years tracking Julian's killer, waiting for her to make a mistake. And last night, when she laughed over your broken body, she used the exact same words Julian’s autopsy report quoted from her witness statement: *'It was an accident! Stop being so dramatic!'*"
