Chapter 5 - The Unraveling Thread

Three weeks passed in an agonizing blur of physical therapy and secret meetings. Ethan moved me from the public hospital into a highly secured private rehabilitation suite owned by his family’s medical division. Armed guards stood outside my door twenty-four hours a day. While I gritted my teeth and screamed through the daily torture of relearning how to bend my shattered knee, Ethan and a team of private forensic investigators tore Jessica’s life apart layer by layer.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Ethan entered my room carrying a battered cardboard archive box and a silver laptop.

"The police forensics report came back," Ethan announced, setting the box on my therapy table. "The titanium tool was indeed purchased under an alias linked to Jessica's offshore credit card. But that's only the tip of the iceberg, Clara."

I leaned on my aluminum crutches, easing myself into a chair. "What else did you find?"

Ethan opened the laptop and pressed play on a surveillance video. The footage was grainy, stamped with a timestamp from eight months ago—the night of my first "accident," the car crash that had initially destroyed my knee and almost ended my life.

"Look closely at the intersection," Ethan pointed to the screen.

The video showed my silver sedan waiting at a red light. Out of nowhere, a heavy pickup truck with blacked-out plates ran the signal, T-boning my driver’s side at fifty miles per hour. The truck driver had fled the scene on foot and was never identified by local police, who had dismissed it as a gang-related hit-and-run.

Ethan fast-forwarded the tape to twenty minutes prior, focusing on a gas station two blocks away from the collision. The truck driver was seen getting out of his cab, approaching a parked luxury coupe, and receiving a thick manila envelope from the driver.

When Ethan zoomed in on the reflection in the coupe's side mirror, my breath hitched.

The driver of the luxury car was wearing oversized designer sunglasses, but the heart-shaped birthmark on her left jawline was unmistakable. It was Jessica.

"She paid him," I whispered, the room spinning around me. "She hired someone to run me down."

"She wanted you dead eight months ago," Ethan said, his voice thick with fury. "Under your father’s will, if you die without a spouse or children, your entire half of the family maritime trust—worth approximately forty million dollars—transfers automatically to Jessica. When the car crash failed to kill you, she was furious. But she had to wait until your surgery recovery to stage another 'freak accident.'"

"And what about Julian?" I asked, trembling with horror. "Why did she kill your brother?"

Ethan reached into the archive box and pulled out a stack of yellowed financial ledgers. "Julian discovered that Jessica was embezzling funds from a charitable foundation they had jointly established in Switzerland. He gave her an ultimatum: turn herself in, or he would go to Interpol. Three days later, Julian 'fell' from that balcony in Como."

Ethan slammed his fist against the table, the wood rattling violently. "She murdered my brother for money. She tried to murder you for money. She plays the fragile, socialite princess while leaving a trail of corpses in her wake. But her empire of lies ends this week."

"What are we going to do?" I asked, looking up at him. "The police won't arrest her on circumstantial video evidence alone. Her high-priced defense attorneys will claim the footage is too grainy to confirm her identity."

"You're right," Ethan said, his eyes gleaming with a dangerous, calculated light. "We won't go to the police with scraps. We will make Jessica confess in front of everyone who matters. She thinks our wedding is taking place on Saturday at the Vance estate. She thinks she has won."

Ethan leaned down, his face inches from mine, his gaze unwavering. "Are you strong enough to stand on your own feet for ten minutes, Clara?"

May you like

I looked down at my heavily braced leg, felt the fire of survival burning through the pain, and nodded. "I will stand. Even if my bones break, I will stand."
