Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master’s Mask

Before I could fully digest Ethan’s terrifying revelation, the heavy door of the private room swung open with theatrical flair.

"Clara! Oh, my darling sister!"

Jessica burst into the room, draped in an immaculate cream-colored cashmere coat, clutching a massive bouquet of white lilies. Behind her trailed two photographers from the local metropolitan press, their cameras flashing relentlessly against the sterile hospital walls. Jessica’s eyes were rimmed with red, her makeup artfully smudged to convey sleepless devotion.

"I’ve been frantic with worry!" she cried, rushing toward the bed and attempting to throw her arms around my shoulders.

"Don't touch me," I rasped, flinching violently away from her embrace.

Jessica paused mid-motion, her expression flickering for a fraction of a second with pure venom before smoothing back into grief for the cameras. "Oh, sweetheart, I know you're in terrible pain. You're delirious from the narcotics. I haven't slept a wink, Clara. When that horrible, ancient door fell, I was so paralyzed with shock that I lost my mind—the doctors called it hysterical coping! I didn't even realize what I was saying!"

"Get the cameras out of this room," Ethan’s voice cut through her performance like an executioner’s axe.

He didn't shout, but the two photojournalists instantly lowered their lenses, intimidated by the lethal authority radiating from the billionaire heir. They exchanged nervous glances and hastily backed out into the corridor, shutting the door behind them.

The moment the latch clicked, the tears vanished from Jessica’s face. She straightened her posture, plucked a rogue thread from her cashmere sleeve, and tossed the expensive bouquet of lilies unceremoniously into the biohazard trash bin.

"Well, that ought to keep the social media trolls quiet for a few days," Jessica sneered, looking down at my heavily bandaged, elevated leg. "Look at you, Clara. Pitiful. You always were such an eyesore, but now you’re practically a gargoyle."

"You did this," I spat, my knuckles white as I gripped the bed rails. "You loosened the hinge pin. You baited me into that vestibule with mother's necklace!"

Jessica gave a delicate, melodic giggle that made my stomach turn. "Can you prove that, dear sister? The venue's security cameras in that specific corridor were undergoing scheduled maintenance. Such unfortunate timing, wouldn't you say?"

She turned her gaze to Ethan, her eyes softening into a seductive, pouty pout. "Ethan, darling, why are you being so cold to me? You shouldn't spend your time in this depressing place smelling of rubbing alcohol. Our wedding planner is waiting at the penthouse. We have contracts to finalize."

"Our wedding planner can wait," Ethan said evenly, leaning against the window sill, his arms crossed over his chest. "I was just discussing your late friend, Julian."

Jessica stiffened. Her manicured fingers dug into the leather strap of her designer handbag, the knuckles whitening under her foundation. For a second, her breath hitched.

"Julian?" she echoed, forcing a tight, nervous smile. "I... I don't know anyone by that name. You must be confusing me with someone else, Ethan. Really, the stress of Clara's clumsiness is getting to your head."

"Is that so?" Ethan took a slow, deliberate step toward her. He towered over her, his presence suffocating the room. "The titanium multi-tool recovered from the scene had traces of black hinge grease. The police are currently running the serial number engraved on the casing. Did you know that high-end titanium tools are registered to their buyers at purchase?"

Jessica swallowed hard, her arrogant veneer cracking at the edges. "I don't know what you're talking about. I’m leaving. Clara, get well soon. If you miss my wedding next month, people will think you're jealous."

She spun on her heels and practically fled out the door, the sharp rhythm of her stilettos echoing frantically down the quiet hospital hall.

Ethan watched her retreat, his jaw set. "She's rattled. When predators like Jessica get rattled, they get sloppy. That's when we strike."
