Chapter 8 - The Knock in Miami

The New Year’s Day sun shone brightly over Collins Avenue, reflecting off the pastel-colored Art Deco buildings and the turquoise Atlantic Ocean. But inside the penthouse suite of the 1 Hotel South Beach, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Eleanor was pacing back and forth across the imported Italian marble floor, her silk robe dragging behind her. Chloe sat on the edge of the unmade king-sized bed, chewing her fingernails down to the quick. Mark was sweating profusely, frantically trying to enter four different credit cards into his phone, only to be met with red error screens on every attempt.

"What do you mean, 'account frozen by judicial order'?" Mark yelled into his receiver. "I'm not even named on David’s primary LLC! How can they freeze my business credit?"

"Because David is a forty-nine percent guarantor on your auto-repair loan, you idiot!" Chloe snapped, her voice shrill with hysteria. "Mom, do something! Call Uncle Robert! Call Aunt Claire! We need twenty thousand dollars right now to clear the hotel bill and book three commercial tickets back to New York!"

"I called Robert three times!" Eleanor shrieked, clutching her temples. "He hung up on me! He said David sent an email to the entire family mailing list at six in the morning with a Dropbox link to the living room camera footage! He said we are monsters and told me never to call his house again!"

"What?" Chloe’s face went bone-white. "He... he sent the video to everyone?"

Before Eleanor could answer, three thunderous knocks rattled the heavy double doors of the penthouse suite.

*BANG. BANG. BANG.*

"Miami-Dade Police Department! Open the door!"

Mark froze, the phone slipping from his sweaty palm and clattering against the marble tile. Chloe burst into loud, terrified sobs, pulling the sheets up to her neck.

"Don't open it!" Eleanor hissed, her eyes wild with panic. "Tell them we’re sleeping! Tell them—"

The lock clicked. The heavy doors swung open to reveal the hotel general manager, flanked by four armed Miami-Dade police officers in tactical uniforms and two plainclothes detectives.

"Eleanor Vance, Chloe Vance, and Mark Davis?" Detective Ramos asked, stepping forward with a sheaf of legal documents.

"This is an outrage!" Eleanor rallied her remaining arrogance, drawing herself up to her full height. "You cannot enter this room without our permission! I am a private citizen, and my son is an influential—"

"Ma'am, turn around and place your hands behind your back," Detective Ramos interrupted, his voice devoid of emotion.

"What?" Eleanor recoiled. "How dare you!"

Two officers stepped forward, grabbed Eleanor’s arms, and spun her around against the wall. The cold steel of the handcuffs clicked shut around her manicured wrists.

"Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest pursuant to an active felony warrant issued by the State of New York for Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, Reckless Endangerment, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child," the officer recited smoothly.

"Get off me! Chloe! Mark! Do something!" Eleanor screeched, thrashing against the officers.

Chloe was hauled out of bed, weeping and hyperventilating as another officer cuffed her. Mark didn't even fight; he dropped to his knees with his hands behind his head, his face pale with utter defeat.

"Search the luggage," the detective ordered.

Two officers unzipped the four large rolling suitcases near the foyer. Within minutes, the evidence was laid out on the center table: boxes of German prescription infant formula, eight packages of vacuum-sealed steaks, Maya’s vintage diamond earrings stolen from her jewelry box, David’s backup laptop, and thousands of dollars in high-end retail clothes with the tags still attached.

"Everything matches the New York manifest," an officer reported, tagging each item in an evidence bag.

"You're going to pay for this!" Eleanor shrieked, her hair coming undone, her face red and distorted as she was dragged toward the open hallway. "David is my son! Everything he has belongs to me! I gave him life!"

Guests opened their doors along the luxurious hallway, gasping and filming on their smartphones as Eleanor Vance—barefoot, handcuffed, and screaming like a madwoman—was marched down the corridor alongside her daughter and son-in-law.
