Chapter 6 - The Weight of Law

By 8:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day, the administrative cogs of the justice system were moving with relentless efficiency.
I sat in a private conference room on the fourth floor of the hospital. Beside me sat Julian Sterling, my corporate attorney and a partner at one of Manhattan’s top civil-criminal crossover firms. Across the mahogany table sat Detective Miller from the NYPD Special Victims and Domestic Crimes Unit, along with an assistant district attorney from the Kings County DA’s office.
"Let’s review the charges we're submitting for the warrant," ADA Marcus said, clicking open a thick manila folder. "First, Grand Larceny in the Third Degree. You provided access to an account strictly designated for household support and medical care. The bank statements show unauthorized personal expenditures exceeding fourteen thousand dollars within a five-day window."
"And the home video?" Julian asked, tapping the table.
"The footage is extraordinary," Detective Miller replied, his expression dark. "It establishes clear criminal intent. We are filing two counts of Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree—a Class D felony—against Eleanor Vance and Chloe Vance. Leaving an incapacitated, post-surgical patient without food, water, or the physical capacity to care for herself constitutes a depraved indifference to human life."
"What about my son?" I asked, my voice cracking slightly.
"Endangering the Welfare of a Child," Miller said firmly. "The video shows Chloe Vance removing prescription formula prescribed by a neonatologist, while your wife audibly stated the infant was starving. Furthermore, we have security footage from the JFK terminal showing the coolers being checked as excess baggage."
"That establishes interstate transport of stolen goods," Julian added smoothly. "And because the baby suffered documented physical injury—specifically, severe dehydration and weight loss requiring acute pediatric intervention—this elevates the charge. We aren't looking at misdemeanors, David. Your mother, your sister, and your brother-in-law are facing serious felony indictments."
"What happens right now?" I asked.
"The Kings County DA’s office has already contacted the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office," ADA Marcus explained. "An emergency fugitive warrant has been entered into the National Crime Information Center database. The Miami-Dade Police Department has been dispatched to their hotel to detain them for extradition back to New York."
I looked out the window. Snow had begun to fall over Brooklyn, coating the brownstones in a pure, untouched white. For years, I had excused my mother’s narcissism. I had ignored the passive-aggressive comments about my wife’s humble background, Chloe’s endless financial demands, and Mark’s arrogant freeloading. I had believed that being a 'good son' meant absorbing their abuse and paying for their peace.
That delusion died tonight.
"Press every charge," I said, looking the detective dead in the eye. "No plea bargains that drop the felonies. No deferred sentences. I want the maximum penalties allowed under New York state law."
Julian nodded, making a note. "I’ll also file an immediate emergency ex-parte motion for a permanent Order of Protection for you, Maya, and Liam, along with a civil freeze on all joint family assets Eleanor might try to liquidate."
"Do it," I said.

I stood up, buttoned my coat, and walked back to the surgical recovery wing. It was time to be the husband and father I should have been from the very start.
