Chapter 7 - The Awakening

When I pushed open the door to Room 412, the room was quiet.
Maya was awake.
The color had begun to creep back into her cheeks, though the dark circles under her eyes looked like bruises. She was propped up on three pillows, a clean cotton hospital gown draped over her shoulders. Liam was lying on her chest, his tiny head nestled into the hollow of her neck, sucking rhythmically on a bottle of medical-grade infant formula held in her trembling hand.
When she saw me, her lips quivered. Tears gathered along the edges of her eyelashes, pooling and spilling over her sunken cheekbones.
"David..." she whispered, her voice frail but steady. "You shouldn't have seen me like that."
I crossed the room in two strides, falling to my knees beside her bed. I buried my face into the crisp white sheets, grasping her free hand. Her skin was cool, the fever finally broken by the IV antibiotics.
"I’m sorry," I choked out, the tears I had held back for twelve hours finally escaping. "I am so sorry, Maya. I brought those monsters into our home. I left you alone with them. I trusted people who didn't deserve to breathe the same air as you."
Maya reached down with her frail fingers, tangling them in my messy hair. "You didn't know, David. You thought they loved you."
"They don't love anyone," I said, lifting my head to look into her amber eyes. "They used me. And when you came into my life, they saw you as a threat to their meal ticket. Why didn't you text me? Why didn't you tell me how bad it was?"
Maya closed her eyes, a heavy tear rolling down her temple.
"Your mother took my phone on the third day," she whispered. "She said I was using it too much and disturbing the baby. She hid it in the high cabinet above the microwave where I couldn't reach it without stretching my stitches. She told me... she told me that if I made a scene, she would tell you I had postpartum psychosis. She said no court would ever let a crazy, broke girl keep Liam."
A violent rage flickered in my chest, but I pushed it down, replacing it with absolute warmth as I looked at my wife.
"They will never touch us again, Maya. Never."
"What did you do?" she asked, her voice trembling with anxiety. "Your mother... she has so much pride. If you cut her off, she’ll turn your entire extended family against you. Uncles, aunts, your cousins..."
"Let them," I said softly, reaching out to gently touch Liam’s soft, downy cheek. "The police have issued felony arrest warrants. Miami-Dade officers are arresting them right now."
Maya gasped, her eyes widening. "Arresting them? Eleanor? In Miami?"
"For grand larceny, reckless endangerment, and child neglect," I told her, kissing her forehead. "I have the camera footage of everything they did. The empty fridge, the stolen formula, the verbal abuse, the jewelry they took from your dresser. It’s over, Maya. They aren't family anymore. They are criminals facing prison time."
Maya let out a long, ragged breath that sounded like a weight being lifted from her soul. She looked down at Liam, who let out a contented baby sigh, his tiny fist curling around her thumb.
May you like
For the first time in eleven days, Maya smiled. It was faint, exhausted, but real.
