Chapter 4 - The Miami Delusion

Eight hours earlier, eleven hundred miles south, the terrace of the 1 Hotel South Beach was bathed in warm, humid ocean air. The sound of house music thumped through the palm trees as the Miami skyline prepared for the biggest New Year’s celebration of the season.
Eleanor Vance smoothed down her designer linen kaftan, purchased two days prior with David’s money, and adjusted her oversized sunglasses. Beside her, Chloe was sipping a twenty-eight-dollar artisanal passionfruit martini, showing off a fresh gel manicure. Mark was leaning back on the plush cabana lounger, puffing on an imported cigar.
"I still can’t believe David earns this kind of money and keeps Maya in that tiny Park Slope apartment," Chloe said, rolling her eyes. "She’s so uncultured. Did you see the way she looked at me when I took the salmon? Like I was stealing from her."
Eleanor took an elegant sip of her sparkling water with lime. "Maya comes from nothing, Chloe. Her father was a mechanic and her mother was a seamstress. When someone from that class marries into a family of our pedigree, they become greedy. If I hadn’t intervened, she would have had David wrapped around her finger forever."
"You did the right thing taking the credit cards, Mom," Mark grunted, adjusting his designer watch. "David is in Germany until next week anyway. He never checks his statements while he’s on site. He’s an obsessive engineer; once he’s on a project, the world ceases to exist."
"Exactly," Eleanor agreed, feeling thoroughly satisfied with herself. "Besides, I raised David. Everything he has belongs to this family first. Maya should be grateful I allowed her to carry his heir. Once she realizes she can’t manage without us, she’ll be far more submissive."
Around 11:45 p.m., the server arrived at their VIP poolside table, bearing an opulent silver tray containing two bottles of vintage Dom Pérignon, artisanal cheese plates, and the final bill for the evening.
"Happy New Year’s Eve, ladies and gentlemen," the server smiled warmly. "The total for tonight’s cabana service and dining is four thousand eight hundred and sixty dollars."
Mark casually slid the black authorized card David had provided across the leather binder. "Put it all on this, buddy. Add twenty-five percent for yourself."
"Thank you, sir. One moment."
Ten minutes dragged by. The countdown to midnight was echoing across the beach promenade. Crowds were cheering, counting down from sixty.
The server returned, his smile gone, replaced by a rigid, professional frostiness. Two floor managers stood several paces behind him, their hands crossed over their waistcoats.
"I'm sorry, sir. This card was declined."
Mark frowned, waving a dismissive hand. "Nonsense. Run it again. It has an eighty-thousand-dollar limit."
"We ran it three times, Mr. Vance," the server said flatly. "The system indicates the card has been reported compromised and canceled by the primary account holder. We also tried the auxiliary card under the name Eleanor Vance. That one came back as 'Authorization Revoked – Card Destroyed'."
Chloe gasped, sitting up straight. "Excuse me? Do you know who we are? Call your manager!"
"I am the floor manager, ma'am," a tall man in a tailored suit stepped forward. "And the front desk has also just notified us that your room deposit of two thousand nine hundred dollars has been disputed and reversed by the primary cardholder. Your suite’s electronic locks have been deactivated. We require immediate payment for the evening’s charges and your remaining balance of seven thousand two hundred dollars, or we will be forced to contact local law enforcement."
Eleanor’s face turned an ugly, blotchy red. "How dare you speak to us like this! This is an administrative error by our bank! I will call my son right this second!"
She pulled her iPhone out of her designer handbag, her fingers trembling with indignance. She dialed David’s number, convinced that this was some ridiculous banking glitch caused by his international travel.

The phone rang four times. Then the line clicked open.
