Chapter 9 - The Unveiling

Evelyn raised one slender hand, and the thunderous applause in the ballroom died down instantly to absolute silence. She adjusted the microphone, her dark eyes scanning the room until they finally settled on the Harrison table.
When her gaze met Marcus's, she did not look angry. She did not look vengeful. She looked at him with the chilling, clinical indifference of a scientist examining a dead specimen beneath a microscope.
"Good evening," Evelyn spoke, her voice pure velvet laced with steel. "When I founded Sovereign Holdings, my philosophy was simple: capital must be deployed toward integrity, resilience, and vision. We build structures that endure. And conversely, we eliminate rot wherever it hides."
Marcus felt the blood drain entirely from his head. Victoria was clutching her chest, gasping for air as if she were having a coronary event.
"For several weeks," Evelyn continued, her gaze never wavering from Marcus's terrified face, "the market has speculated about Sovereign’s acquisition of Harrison Logistics. Rumors suggested we were prepared to inject five hundred million dollars to absorb their international shipping operations."
Marcus leaned forward, a desperate, pathetic spark of hope igniting in his drowning chest. *Maybe she still loves me,* his warped mind screamed. *Maybe this is all a test. A show of power to make me crawl back to her.*
"However," Evelyn’s voice turned ice-cold, cutting through the hall like a razor, "upon conducting our final forensic audit, Sovereign Holdings discovered that Harrison Logistics is fundamentally bankrupt, compromised by catastrophic mismanagement, fraudulent asset inflation, and three hundred and eighty million dollars in defaulted debt."
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
"As the sole holder of that defaulted debt through our subsidiary, Consortium Bancorp," Evelyn announced clearly, "Sovereign Holdings has officially called the loan due as of eight o'clock tonight. Because Mr. Marcus Harrison cannot satisfy the covenant, foreclosure proceedings have commenced. Every warehouse, every freight vessel, and every commercial asset belonging to Harrison Logistics is now under the direct receivership of Sovereign Holdings."
"No!" Marcus screamed, finally shattering his paralysis. He knocked his chair backward, staggering toward the stage with wild, manic eyes. "Evelyn! Stop! You can't do this! You’re my wife!"
The ballroom erupted into chaos. High-society patrons recoiled in disgust as Marcus stumbled into the aisle, his bowtie crooked, his face contorted in hysterical desperation.
Four Sovereign security guards immediately stepped forward, blocking his path with impassable physical mass.
Evelyn looked down at him from the elevated stage, her expression completely detached.
"Your wife?" Evelyn spoke into the microphone, her words echoing into every corner of the room. "The prenuptial agreement you forced me to sign two nights ago was ratified by the court clerk this morning, Marcus. By your own insistence, I walked away with nothing. And by the exact terms of that same document, you waived every claim to any asset, trust, or corporation owned by me prior to or during our union."
"You tricked me!" Marcus shrieked, tears of rage and terror streaming down his face as security guards gripped his arms. "You lied to me! You lived in that tiny apartment! You let me pay for your groceries!"
"I lived simply because I value peace over ostentation," Evelyn replied quietly. "And you took my simplicity for weakness. You invited your family to humiliate me. You watched your mother cut my wedding dress into strips. You stood by while red wine was poured on my head. And you told me I was trash that deserved to be thrown into the gutter."

Victoria let out a wailing scream from the table, collapsing face-first onto the linen cloth as society photographers’ flashes exploded around her like blinding lightning.
