Chapter 7 - Ashley’s True Colors

The arrest of the family patriarch sent shockwaves through the ballroom, but Marcus remained stubbornly entrenched in his narcissism. He downed another glass of scotch, his knuckles white as he gripped the table.
"It’s a political hit," Marcus whispered frantically to Victoria, whose face was now streaked with smeared eyeliner. "Don't break, Mother. The media will eat us alive if we show fear. The moment Sovereign takes the stage and signs our equity agreement, the narrative flips. Money fixes federal indictments. Sovereign’s legal division will step in and crush this."
Victoria nodded numbly, grasping at Marcus’s words like a drowning woman clinging to a stone.
Ashley, however, was already recalculating her survival. Her posture had shifted; she pulled her hand away from Marcus’s sleeve, her eyes darting nervously toward the exits.
"Marcus," Ashley whispered, her sweet, melodic tone suddenly replaced by a sharp, calculating edge. "Are you absolutely certain the Sovereign contract is guaranteed? Because if your family accounts are frozen, your bridge loans are going to default."
Marcus stared at her, stunned by her sudden coldness. "What kind of question is that right now? We’re in this together, Ashley. You’re having my child!"
"I am carrying a baby, yes," Ashley said, her voice dropping into flat indifference. "A baby that requires financial security. I didn't leave my former life to be dragged through an FBI scandal. If this deal doesn't close tonight, Marcus, I have to think about my future."
"Your future?" Marcus hissed, betrayal flashing in his eyes. "I threw away my marriage for you! I kicked Evelyn onto the street with nothing because you said she was a parasite holding me back!"
"And she was!" Ashley snapped back viciously. "She was a pathetic nobody! But at least she didn't have federal agents circling her like vultures. If you lose your company, Marcus, don't expect me to play the loyal martyr."
Victoria gasped, glaring at Ashley with venomous fury. "You ungrateful, calculating little tramp! After everything we gave you? We welcomed you into our home!"
"You welcomed me because my father had a hedge fund, Victoria," Ashley sneered openly. "Except my father’s fund collapsed last month, and your family is being arrested in evening wear. We used each other. Let’s not pretend it was love."
Marcus felt as if the room were spinning. The immaculate facade of his life was fracturing from the inside out. He had cast aside Evelyn—a woman who had nursed him when he was sick, who had cooked his meals, who had looked at him with gentle, uncritical devotion—for a woman whose loyalty evaporated at the first sign of pressure.
Before he could respond, the ballroom lights dimmed. The gentle hum of the orchestra ceased, replaced by the deep, commanding chime of the venue's audio system.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the master of ceremonies announced from the podium, his voice echoing across the silent hall. "Please welcome the Senior Managing Director of Sovereign Holdings, Mr. Julian Vance, accompanied by the majority shareholder and Global Chief Executive Officer of the Sovereign Group."

Marcus let out a shuddering breath of relief. "This is it," he whispered, wiping sweat from his brow. "Sovereign is here. The nightmare is over."
