Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ghost

The penthouse floor of the Sovereign Holdings tower rose eighty stories above Manhattan, overlooking the glittering grid of the city like a modern fortress of glass and obsidian. At six in the morning, the executive boardroom was silent except for the low hum of encrypted servers and the sharp click of my black Christian Louboutin heels against the imported basalt tile.

I wore a tailored charcoal double-breasted suit, my dark hair pulled into a sleek, severe chignon. Dr. Morrison had completed my examination an hour prior in the private residential wing. My child was healthy, heart beating like a tiny metronome of vengeance. That pulse was all the fuel I needed.

Julian Vance entered carrying a thick leather folio. He took one look at me and inclined his head with profound deference. "You look yourself again, Evelyn."

"Report," I commanded, sitting at the head of the twenty-seat boardroom table.

Julian opened the dossier, laying out three distinct financial dossiers stamped with crimson seals. "Harrison Logistics owes three hundred and eighty million dollars to Consortium Bancorp, maturing in fourteen business days. Marcus Harrison attempted to disguise their default risk by pledging their commercial warehouses as collateral. What he doesn't know is that Sovereign Holdings bought Consortium Bancorp's distressed debt portfolios through our Luxembourg subsidiary three weeks ago."

A faint, merciless smile touched my lips. "So Marcus is borrowing money from me to pay back a debt owed to me."

"Precisely," Julian said. "He believes he is negotiating an equity buyout. In reality, you already hold the deed to his corporate throat. We can initiate a margin call and force involuntary liquidation by tomorrow afternoon."

"No," I replied, tracing the edge of the financial report. "Liquidation is too fast. It allows Marcus to hide behind bankruptcy protections and play the tragic victim of macroeconomic shifts. I want him to believe his salvation is assured until the exact second it is stripped away. What about Richard?"

Julian pulled the second tab. "Judge Richard Harrison’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands contain twelve million dollars funneled through shell companies tied to private prison operators he favored during his federal tenure. Our forensic specialists have unsealed the offshore ledger entries and matched the IP addresses to his personal residential network."

"Deliver those files to the Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation," I ordered. "Make sure the prosecutor assigned to the case is someone Richard publicly insulted during his confirmation hearings. And Ashley Summers?"

Julian’s expression turned grimly amused. "Our investigators conducted a deep background check on Miss Summers' claimed aristocratic pedigree. Her father’s private hedge fund went bankrupt four months ago; he is facing immediate indictment for pension embezzlement in Delaware. Furthermore, we pulled the medical records from the private clinic where she received her prenatal screening."

Julian slid a single sheet of paper toward me. I scanned the genetic markers, and my eyes narrowed with cold amusement.

"The child is not Marcus's," I murmured, reading the paternity exclusion probabilities.

"Not even close," Julian confirmed. "The biological father is Ashley's personal trainer, with whom she maintained an active relationship until she discovered Marcus Harrison had an inheritance to plunder."

I closed the file with a deliberate snap. "Keep that card in reserve. Marcus threw away his real child for an illusion constructed by a grifter. The irony must be delivered to him in public, under the brightest lights possible."

"The annual Metropolitan Winter Gala is in seventy-two hours," Julian noted. "Marcus has reserved the central patron table, anticipating the Sovereign Holdings partnership announcement."

"Excellent," I said softly, looking out over the awakening city. "Prepare my invitation. It is time for Evelyn Cross to attend a Harrison family gathering."
