Chapter 5 - The Illusion of Grandeur

Over the next forty-eight hours, the Harrison family moved through Manhattan like conquering royalty, completely blind to the guillotine poised above their necks. Marcus had taken an unsecured bridge loan from an aggressive short-term lender to finance a vulgar display of wealth, leasing a fleet of luxury towncars and reserving the most expensive designer suite on Fifth Avenue for Ashley.
"Look at this," Ashley squealed, spinning before the floor-to-ceiling mirrors in a custom emerald gown that cost ninety thousand dollars. "The emeralds bring out my eyes, don’t they? When Sovereign announces the merger tonight, the society columnists won't be able to look at anyone else."
Marcus wrapped his arms around her waist, watching their reflection with absolute smugness. "You were born for this, Ash. My mother said the same thing this morning. She told me that getting rid of Evelyn was like clearing away weeds to plant orchids."
Ashley giggled, kissing his jawline. "Has your father heard anything about her? She hasn't tried to call or beg, has she?"
Marcus scoffed, adjusting his platinum cuff links. "Beg? With what phone? Richard had her accounts locked tight. The apartment superintendent threw whatever junk she left behind straight into the alley dumpster yesterday. She’s probably sleeping in a women’s shelter or begging her old community college colleagues for a couch to sleep on. She’s irrelevant, Ashley. A ghost."
Downstairs, Victoria Harrison was pacing the entrance hall of the family manor, issuing sharp commands to her personal stylist while Richard sat in the study, his phone pressed to his ear.
"What do you mean the wire transfer didn't clear?" Richard barked into the receiver, his aristocratic face flushing purple. "That account in Grand Cayman has been operational for seven years! Check the routing protocols again."
"Judge Harrison, I am telling you the assets have been frozen pursuant to an international mutual legal assistance treaty," the offshore banker stammered on the other end. "The United States Department of Justice issued an emergency freeze order at midnight. We cannot release a single dollar."
Richard slammed the receiver down, his chest heaving. His heart beat an erratic rhythm against his ribs. For the first time in thirty years, a cold tendril of doubt pierced his arrogance. He reached for his personal safe to retrieve his passport and bearer bonds, only to find the digital keypad displaying an error code.
Before he could process the panic, Marcus’s voice echoed down the corridor. "Dad! The limousines are outside! If we don’t leave now, we’ll miss the opening remarks by the Sovereign board!"
Richard swallowed hard, wiping a sheen of cold sweat from his forehead. He forced his expression into its practiced mask of judicial authority. *It’s just an administrative glitch,* he told himself frantically. *Once Marcus closes the Sovereign partnership tonight, we will have hundreds of millions in domestic liquidity. The DOJ won't dare touch a family backed by Sovereign Holdings.*

He adjusted his tuxedo lapels, grabbed his cane, and walked out to join his family. They climbed into the stretched black vehicle, laughing, drinking champagne from crystal flutes, and speeding toward the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, completely unaware that their executioner had already arrived.
