Chapter 10 - The Vows of Steel

Six months later.
The wedding took place in a small, historic stone chapel overlooking the lake—not the grand, cold ballroom where the fake engagement had taken place, but an intimate, warm space filled with spring flowers, soft candlelight, and true friends.
Edna Hollis sat in the front row, wiping tears from her eyes with a lace handkerchief. Gabe stood beside Nico as his best man, looking sharp and proud in a black tuxedo.
Wes, completely cured and glowing with health, served as the ring bearer, walking proudly down the aisle in a miniature suit.
And then, the doors opened.
Adeline walked down the aisle, wearing a simple, breathtaking gown of white lace, holding a bouquet of lily-of-the-valley. Her hair fell in soft curls around her shoulders, and her smile illuminated the entire chapel.
Nico stood at the altar, watching her approach. His heart beat with a fierce, joyful rhythm he had never felt before.
When her father’s hand released hers, Nico took Adeline’s hand, holding it tight.
"You look stunning," he whispered softly.
"You don't look too bad yourself, Patient Alfieri," she teased gently back.
The priest read the traditional vows, but when it came time for their personal promises, Nico held both of Adeline's hands, looking directly into her eyes.
"Adeline," Nico said, his voice deep and echoing with absolute sincerity. "You entered my home as a nurse, but you became my savior. You saw a man when the world saw a corpse. I promise to honor you, protect you, and love you through every storm and every victory, for as long as I draw breath."
Adeline smiled through her tears. "Nico, you showed me what true strength looks like. You fought through darkness to protect the people you love. I promise to stand by your side, walk beside you, and love you forever."
May you like
"By the power vested in me," the priest announced with a warm smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Nico pulled Adeline into his arms, kissing her deeply as the chapel bells began to chime, their sound ringing joyfully across the water.
