Chapter 9 - The Promise at the Lake

The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, casting a golden-rose light across the lawn of the Alfieri estate.

The iron gates were open, no longer a symbol of imprisonment, but a welcoming entrance to a home that had finally found peace.

Nico and Adeline walked along the stone path near the water's edge. The cool autumn breeze rustled through the tall oak trees, but Adeline felt completely warm wrapped in Nico's heavy wool coat, which he had draped over her shoulders.

They stopped at the edge of the wooden pier overlooking the calm water.

Nico turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his.

"I used to hate this lake," Nico said quietly, looking out over the water. "When I sat in that chair, staring out the window, I thought my life was over. I thought the only thing left for me was to fight off vultures until someone finally finished me off."

"And now?" Adeline asked softly, stepping closer to him.

Nico reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small velvet box. He opened it to reveal a stunning ring featuring a brilliant, flawless sapphire surrounded by small, glittering diamonds.

"And now," Nico said, looking deeply into her eyes, his voice filled with raw emotion, "I look at this lake and I see a future. A future with the woman who stood between me and a bullet, who fought for my life when she owed me nothing."

He sank down onto one knee—strong, steady, and unbroken—holding the ring up toward her.

"Adeline Marsh," Nico said, his dark eyes shining with love, "will you do me the honor of becoming my wife? Not for a family contract, not for an estate transfer... but because I love you with everything I am."

Tears spilled over Adeline's cheeks—happy, radiant tears that wiped away every memory of struggle, fear, and poverty she had ever known.

"Yes," Adeline whispered, dropping to her knees beside him on the pier, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. "Yes, Nico! A thousand times yes!"

Nico slid the sapphire ring onto her finger, pulling her into a passionate, breathtaking kiss as the sun dipped beneath the horizon, painting the sky in shades of gold and crimson.
