Chapter 6 - The Trap Collapses

Seventeen days passed like a tightening coil.
The night of the engagement party arrived. The Alfieri mansion was transformed into a glittering palace of gold leaf, crystal chandeliers, and white roses. Over thirty high-profile guests—mafia bosses, corrupt judges, influential shipping magnates, and wealthy socialites—filled the grand ballroom.
A chamber pianist played soft classical music in the corner, while waiters in silver-trimmed vests carried trays of champagne and caviar through the crowd.
In his private dressing room, Nico sat in his wheelchair. He wore a crisp white tailored shirt and black trousers. His face was pale, his eyes heavy—a performance he had perfected to convince Marcus and Camille that his physical state was at its absolute lowest.
Adeline stood behind him, carefully buttoning his cuffs. Her hands were steady, but inside, her nerves were stretched to the snapping point. Beneath his black trousers, wrapped tightly in thin supportive braces she had secretly fitted an hour ago, Nico's legs possessed seventy percent of their original strength.
"Gabe is stationed in the main foyer with four loyal men," Nico whispered, looking at her reflection in the mirror. "When Marcus makes his speech, he will present the forged power of attorney documents to the board members present."
"And Dr. Sterling?" Adeline asked softly.
"He's downstairs, waiting to sign the medical declaration certifying that I am mentally unfit due to chronic neurological decay," Nico replied grimly. "They think tonight is my execution night."
"Be careful," she murmured, her hand lingering on his broad shoulder.
Nico turned his chair, grabbing her hand and pulling her close for a fleeting second. "Whatever happens out there, stay behind me, Adeline."
Ten minutes later, Nico was wheeled into the grand foyer by one of Marcus's personal guards.
The room fell into a polite, performative silence as the "disabled boss" was positioned near the grand marble staircase. Marcus Alfieri, a tall, slick man of forty with cold blue eyes and a gold watch, stepped to the center of the floor, holding a crystal glass of champagne.
"Friends, family, and distinguished partners," Marcus boomed, his voice carrying across the marble foyer. "Tonight we gather not only to celebrate the upcoming union of my cousin Nico and the lovely Camille Ashcroft, but also to secure the future of the Alfieri enterprise during this difficult chapter."
Camille stepped up beside Marcus, looking stunning in a strapless ruby-red silk gown, her diamond necklace catching the light. She offered the crowd a tragic, brave smile.
"As many of you know," Marcus continued, putting on an expression of grave sorrow, "Nico's health has declined severely over the past few weeks. Despite our best efforts and constant medical care, his neurological condition has rendered him incapable of managing the heavy responsibilities of our family's shipping and logistics operations."
Murmurs rippled through the gathered crowd. Several senior board members exchanged uneasy glances.
Marcus pulled a thick blue folder from his jacket pocket. "Therefore, with Dr. Sterling's medical certification and Camille's consent as his legal guardian-to-be, I am stepping forward tonight to assume full executive control of the Alfieri Syndicate."
Nico sat quietly in his wheelchair, his face devoid of emotion. "Marcus," he said softly, his voice cutting through the room. "You haven't shown those documents to me."
Camille stepped forward, her red lips curving into a patronizing, contemptuous sneer as she looked down at Nico. "Oh, Nico, darling... don't make a scene in front of our guests. You're confused. The medication makes it so hard for you to think clearly."
"I am perfectly clear, Camille," Nico said calmly. "And I refuse to sign."
Camille’s eyes flashed with sudden, cruel impatience. She reached down, snatching a paper from Marcus's folder, leaning down close to Nico's face. "You don't have a choice anymore, Nico. You sign it, or we move you to the asylum facility tonight."
"No," Nico said simply.
Camille’s aristocratic composure completely shattered. Fueled by months of arrogant control and the sudden threat of losing millions, her jeweled hand flew back and struck Nico across the face with a loud, ringing CRACK!
The strike echoed across the marble foyer like a gunshot.
The pianist stopped playing. The room froze into absolute, horrified silence.
Nico's chair tilted under the force of the blow, and to make her point clear, Camille shoved his shoulder violently, sending Nico spilling out of his wheelchair onto the cold marble floor.
"You embarrassed me!" Camille hissed, her face contorted with rage as the guests gasped in shock.
Nico lay on the floor, one palm pressed against the cold marble, the other locking around the leg of a console table to hold himself up. His cheek burned red, but his dark eyes remained deadly calm as he looked up at her.
"Put your hand down," Nico said quietly.
Camille laughed, a shrill, hysterical sound, her jeweled hand rising a second time to strike him while he lay helpless on the ground. "What are you going to do if I don’t?"
She swung her hand down toward his face.
That was when Adeline moved.
A medication tray hit the floor behind her, scattering plastic cups across the marble. Adeline crossed the distance in a flash, her hand cutting through the air, catching Camille’s wrist in midair with an iron grip that froze the strike cold!
The room inhaled as one collective breath.
"You will not touch him again," Adeline declared, her voice ringing out like a silver bell through the silent foyer.
Camille stared at the nurse in absolute disbelief. "Take your hand off me!"
"No," Adeline replied, her eyes burning with unyielding fire as she stepped protectively over Nico's body.
"You work for him!" Camille shrieked.
"I care for him," Adeline countered fiercely. "And right now, I’m the only person in this house acting like he’s human!"
Camille ripped her arm free, her face red with humiliation. "You have no idea what you’re interfering with!"
Adeline looked at her, thinking of the altered vials, the hidden notebooks, and the poisons. "I know exactly what I'm interfering with, Camille."
"Enough of this circus!" Marcus roared, stepping forward and pulling a gun from his jacket holster, aiming it directly at Adeline's chest. "Guards! Drag this useless nurse out of here and clear the room!"
Not a single guard moved.
Marcus blinked, looking around in confusion. "I said, drag her out!"
From the dark floor behind Adeline, a low, rumbling sound began to echo.
It was Nico laughing.

Slowly, deliberately, without using his hands to pull himself up, Nico Alfieri placed his bare feet flat against the marble floor.
The room gasped as the man who was supposed to be permanently paralyzed straightened his knees, shifted his weight, and stood up onto his own two feet.
