Chapter 8 - The Puppet Master

Marcus steered the SUV into the industrial heart of Gary, Indiana, stopping before an abandoned pharmaceutical storage depot. Inside, buried beneath two layers of concrete, lay a makeshift neuro-hacking lab equipped with military-grade signal dampeners and liquid-nitrogen-cooled processing units.

Marcus strapped Samantha into a modified dentist’s chair equipped with sensory monitoring arrays. He connected diagnostic leads to the skin surrounding her temporal wound.

"The microphone Chloe used at the wedding was fitted with a high-velocity pneumatic injector developed for military field integration," Marcus explained, typing furiously on a terminal. "The brute force shattered the bone just enough to bypass the blood-brain barrier without causing fatal hemorrhaging. The capsule deployed a dormant neural cluster containing Arthur’s digitized cognitive map."

"Can you cut it out?" Samantha pleaded, feeling the foreign synapses pulsing beneath her temple like burrowing worms.

"Cutting it out with conventional surgery would turn your temporal and parietal lobes into mush," Marcus answered bleakly. "The filaments have already braided around your motor and memory banks. If we tear them out mechanically, your consciousness goes with them."

"Then what do we do?!"

Marcus turned the monitor toward her. The screen showed an active data-uplink map. "Arthur's digital ghost isn't entirely inside your head yet. Only the bridge was planted. The core consciousness—the terabytes of his memories, ego, and executive functions—is stored on a localized server array inside Vance NeuroTech’s central facility downtown. Chloe was using a local repeater to beam it into you."

"She’s a puppet," Samantha whispered, remembering Chloe's hollow, unblinking stare.

"Worse," Marcus said. "Her own identity was partially overwritten during Arthur’s first failed experiment. She’s running on a corrupted subroutine of Arthur’s will. To save yourself—and whatever is left of your sister—we have to sever the primary server and purge the data at the source."
