Chapter 11 - The Extraction and the Aftermath

With a deafening explosion of sparks, the primary server racks ruptured. Liquid cooling fluid rained down like chemical snow over the vault. The high-voltage feedback surged backward through the fiber-optic umbilicals.

Chloe let out a bloodcurdling shriek as the port behind her ear flared with blue electricity. She slumped forward in her harnesses, motionless.

Samantha’s restraints popped open as the security system experienced total systemic collapse. Bleeding from her ears, nose, and temple, Samantha threw herself from the chair and crawled to Chloe’s side. She tore the smoking cables from her sister's skull port. Chloe gasped, her chest heaving violently, her eyes rolling back into focus. For the first time in years, the dead, algorithmic gloss was gone from Chloe’s gaze, replaced by raw, childlike terror.

"Sammy...?" Chloe whispered, her voice cracked and frail. "It hurts... it hurts so much..."

"I've got you," Samantha sobbed, wrapping her arms around her broken sister. "He's gone. He's dead, Chloe. He's dead."

Marcus, crawling through the shattered glass, dragged them both into the service lift just as the emergency fire suppression protocols flooded the vault with inert, suffocating halon gas, permanently erasing every digital trace of Arthur Vance’s work.

Three months later.

The quiet coastal clinic in northern Maine smelled of ocean salt and pine needles, worlds away from Chicago’s glittering ballrooms.

Samantha sat on an open veranda wrapped in a thick wool blanket, watching the grey waves crash against the rocky shore. Inside the cottage, Chloe sat quietly, learning how to speak, write, and feel again under the patient care of specialized neuro-rehabilitation therapists. Chloe was deeply traumatized, but her mind was entirely her own once more.

Dr. Evans’s colleagues had performed a delicate, fourteen-hour craniotomy to remove the deactivated filaments from Samantha's brain. The scar along her hairline was faint now, hidden beneath her grown-out hair. The nightmare was over. The Vance fortune had been liquidated into quiet, untraceable medical trusts. They were finally free.
