Chapter 4 - The Pathological Report

At 4:00 PM on the fourth day, Samantha's phone rang. The screen displayed Dr. Evans’s private line. She answered instantly, pressing the receiver against her uninjured ear.
"Samantha, you need to come to the hospital basement archives right now," Dr. Evans said, his voice ragged, breathless, and laced with dread. "Use the service entrance by the morgue. Do not tell anyone where you are going."
Thirty minutes later, Samantha slipped through the cold, dim subterranean corridors of the hospital. Dr. Evans was waiting outside an unmarked pathology lab, his white coat stained with coffee, dark bags bruising the skin beneath his eyes. He pulled her inside and locked the heavy door behind them.
On a high-resolution electron microscope screen, a magnified image was frozen. It looked like an intricate, synthetic root system fusing seamlessly with human neural pathways.
"The capsule I pulled out was merely the engine casing," Dr. Evans explained, pointing a trembling pen at the monitor. "Before I extracted it, it discharged a bio-synthetic liquid crystal polymer. It mimics neurotransmitters, tricking your brain cells into incorporating artificial synapses."
"What does it do?" Samantha choked out, feeling the cold tiles sway beneath her boots.
"It’s an invasive neural interface recorder and override hub," Dr. Evans answered grimly. "Patented five years ago under a classified biomedical defense initiative known as Project Mnemosyne. The project went dark after the lead researcher died."
"Who was the lead researcher?"
Dr. Evans pulled up a redacted document on his terminal and scrolled to the founder's signature. Samantha’s breath seized. The signature belonged to her and Chloe’s late father, Arthur Vance, a brilliant neuroscientist who had supposedly perished in an accidental lab fire three years prior.

"Arthur didn't die broke, Samantha," Dr. Evans whispered. "He succeeded. And Chloe didn't hit you out of spite. She used your father’s prototype to turn your skull into a biological vault."
