Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Signal

"You're lying!" Samantha screamed, taking a threatening step forward. "Dad died in that fire! We identified the remains!"

"We identified dental records planted by an intelligence contractor," Chloe retorted, rising smoothly from her sofa. She walked toward Samantha without an ounce of fear, her eyes glassy and unblinking. "Dad knew his body was failing from pancreatic cancer. The technology wasn't ready to transfer a full human consciousness into an artificial substrate. The human mind rejects synthetic housing. It requires a genetically compatible living brain."

Samantha’s stomach dropped into a bottomless abyss. "No... that’s impossible."

"He needed a host with ninety-nine percent biological affinity," Chloe whispered, stopping mere inches from Samantha. Chloe gently tapped the side of her own head. "He tried me first. But my brain chemistry rejected the architecture. It degraded my emotional processing. It made me... hollow."

As Chloe spoke, Samantha’s vision violently fractured. High-definition data overlays materialized across her sightline, flickering like phantom computer screens projected onto reality. She saw stream after stream of encrypted code, surveillance logs of her daily routine over the past six months, and finally, a 3D biometric render of her own brain.

The device inside her skull had fully synced.

Through the internal audio feed, the synthetic voice dissolved, replaced by a terrifyingly familiar baritone—the calm, calculating voice of her father, Arthur Vance.

*"Hello, Samantha,"* the voice echoed from the depths of her subconscious. *"Do not be afraid of the architecture. You are simply returning home."*

Samantha dropped the bronze statuette. She collapsed to her knees, clutching her skull with both hands, screaming as foreign memories—decades of complex neuro-engineering formulas, unfamiliar childhood recollections that weren't hers, and cold, clinical cruelty—began writing themselves directly over her own thoughts.
