Chapter 16 - The Inversion Surge

Pain was not an adequate word for what happened next.
It was as if an arc-welder had been struck inside Samantha's skull, transforming every neuron into an incandescent filament of white-hot magnesium. The universe contracted to a single, blinding point of agony that stripped away her name, her past, her senses, and her physical form.
The electrical current from Julian's high-voltage industrial battery didn't just shock her flesh—it traveled along the microscopic, bio-synthetic prions embedded within her neural architecture, reversing the polarity of the carrier wave that Arthur was using to download his consciousness.
Instead of Arthur pulling Samantha into his digital oblivion, Samantha’s raw, screaming human agony surged backward down the line.
Through the copper wire, through the Faraday mesh, and straight into the receiver in Chloe's brain stem.
Chloe let out a shriek that was entirely Arthur's—a sound of digital fury and mechanical panic as hundreds of thousands of volts of uncontrolled, chaotic human pain flooded the synthetic boot sector.
"ABORT!" the voice tearing from Chloe's throat cracked, shifting between Arthur’s baritone and Chloe’s terrified soprano. "SYSTEM DE-SYNC! THE SIGNAL IS... THE BUFFER IS OVERFLOWING—"
Inside Samantha's mind, the cold, pristine geometry of Arthur Vance's digital empire began to shatter. She saw his memories, but she didn't cower before them. She tore into them with the feral savagery of a cornered beast. She flooded his clean, algorithmic logic with her grief: the smell of the hospital room when their mother died of cancer; the suffocating panic of the emergency room on Chloe’s wedding night; the sticky, metallic feel of her own blood dripping down her neck while Arthur's puppet smiled at her.
*You want my brain, Arthur?* Samantha screamed silently into the void of the neural link. *TAKE ALL OF IT.*
She leaned harder into the wire, smelling the sickening odor of her own burning skin and hair as the current scorched the surgical incision.
Inside the Faraday cage, Chloe collapsed to the floor, convulsing violently as blue electrical arcs crackled across the reconstructed port behind her ear. Julian’s rolling battery bank began to smoke, its vacuum tubes blowing out in a rapid succession of loud, glass-shattering pops.
"Marcus!" Samantha managed to choke out through locked jaws, her vision completely white with neural static. "THE COIL! PULL THE COIL NOW!"
Marcus didn't hesitate. Realizing the loop had locked Arthur’s signal into an isolated, local circuit between the two sisters and Julian, he slammed his boot against the emergency manual release lever of Alistair Vance's antique degaussing array.
High above them, suspended from the concrete ceiling of the bunker, a ring of four-ton electromagnets engaged with a deafening, mechanical roar.
The air inside the bunker instantly ionized, turning a vibrant, unnatural shade of violet. Every metal object in the room—wrenches, ammunition casings, tin cans—leaped from the tables and slammed against the ceiling magnets. The sound was like a freight train crashing into a steel vault.
Samantha felt a sharp, violent snap at the base of her skull, like a violin string snapping under impossible tension.

The white light vanished. The heat vanished.
The universe plummeted into absolute, suffocating darkness.
