Chapter 9 - The Anatomy of a Collapse

By Thursday morning, the reality of their destruction had set in with ruthless efficiency.
Unable to afford a luxury suite, Ethan had been forced to spend half of his remaining liquid cash to put Linda and Chloe into a cramped, two-star extended-stay motel near the industrial bypass. The room smelled of stale cigarettes and cheap disinfectant, with two double beds and a kitchenette featuring a dented microwave.
Chloe lay on one of the beds, screaming at Ethan between sobbing fits.
"You said she was weak!" Chloe wailed, throwing a plastic cup at his head. "You said she was a pushover who would do whatever you told her! You told me I could have my baby in a mansion! Now look at me! I’m in a roach motel with boxes of diapers stacked to the ceiling! My baby is going to be born in a slum because of you!"
"Shut up, Chloe!" Ethan yelled back, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night spent staring at the ceiling. "I didn't know she was going to sell the damn house! Who sells an estate in twenty-four hours?!"
"A woman who despises you, that's who!" Linda spat from the kitchenette corner, where she was trying to scrub a coffee mug. "I told you to be smart with her, Ethan! I told you to play the long game until Chloe’s baby was settled and the adoption papers or trust funds were secured! But you had to act like a big man! You had to yell at her and show off!"
"You told me to put her in her place!" Ethan screamed, turning on his mother. "You were the one sitting on her sofa telling me she was spoiled! You were the one who demanded we move her things to the basement! You pushed this, Mom! Both of you pushed this!"
The toxic blame-shifting echoed within the thin drywall of the motel room until Ethan couldn't take it anymore. He grabbed his car keys and drove straight to Vance & Sterling Legal Associates downtown.
He marched past the receptionist, his face wild and frantic. "I need to see Arthur Vance right now! Tell him Ethan Hayes is here!"
Arthur Vance stepped out of his corner office, completely unruffled. He wore a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit and held a thick manila folder in his hands.
"There is no need to shout, Mr. Hayes," Arthur said calmly. "Step inside."
Ethan slammed the heavy office door behind him. "Where is Clara? What did she do with the money from the house? I want fifty percent of that sale! We are legally married, and that was our marital home! You tell her to wire two million dollars to my account today, or I will drag her through every divorce court in this country!"
Arthur sat down behind his desk, opened the manila folder, and slid three separate documents across the table.
"First," Arthur began, his voice flat and clinical. "The petition for the dissolution of marriage was filed with the clerk of courts at eight-thirty this morning. You are officially served."
Ethan stared at the legal summons, his chest heaving.
"Second," Arthur continued. "Here is a certified copy of the Montgomery Trust prenuptial deed. Under Section 14, Subsection B, you explicitly waived any right to marital equitable distribution regarding separate real property, trust disbursements, or inheritance capital. You have zero legal claim to the proceeds of the Oakwood Terrace sale. Not fifty percent. Not one single dollar."
"I'll contest it!" Ethan shouted. "I signed that under duress!"
"You signed that in the presence of your own independent attorney, who was paid for by Clara's family trust, after a thirty-day review period," Arthur said with a dry, devastating chuckle. "I videotaped the execution of the document myself. You smiled for the camera and stated on the record that you were marrying Clara for love, not her money."
Ethan sank into the leather chair, his bravado evaporating, leaving only a hollow, sickening terror.
"Where is she, Arthur?" Ethan whispered, his voice cracking. "Please. Just let me talk to her. I can fix this. I love her. I made a mistake. I was stressed about my sister, and I lost my temper. I didn't mean the things I said. Please, just give me her number."
"Mr. Hayes," Arthur said, closing the folder with a soft, final snap. "Clara Montgomery does not exist in your world anymore. She has relocated outside the jurisdiction of this court. Her phone number is unlisted, her digital presence is erased, and any attempt by you, your mother, or your sister to contact her, track her, or approach her will be met with immediate criminal harassment charges."
"She can't just erase me," Ethan breathed, tears finally spilling over his lashes. "We were married for three years."
May you like
"She didn't erase you, Ethan," Arthur said, looking him dead in the eye. "You erased yourself the moment you told her to watch her mouth in the house her family built."
