Chapter 8 - Standing on the Pavement

What followed was a spectacle of unmitigated chaos that drew the attention of every wealthy neighbor on Oakwood Terrace.

Chloe, wailing hysterically and hyperventilating, was escorted down the curving front staircase by two female security officers. She was wearing oversized sweatpants and an unbuttoned cardigan, clutching a half-assembled infant bassinet against her chest as though it were a life raft.

"My baby!" Chloe sobbed, collapsing onto the manicured front lawn. "You're kicking out a pregnant woman! This is illegal! I'm going to sue you! I'm going to sue every single one of you!"

"You're welcome to retain counsel, ma'am," Marcus Reed said without looking at her, checking his wristwatch. "Five minutes."

Ethan and Linda were frantically scrambling through the house, grabbing whatever they could carry in garbage bags provided by the movers. Ethan emerged carrying three suits on wire hangers, an armful of designer sneakers, and an expensive espresso machine he had purchased with my money two months prior.

Linda stumbled out behind him, carrying a massive cardboard box overflowing with newborn diapers, baby formula cans, and piles of unwrapped shower gifts that were still spilling out onto the driveway.

"You can't do this!" Linda screamed at Deputy Miller, her face blotchy and tears streaking her makeup. "Ethan, do something! Where is Clara? Call that ungrateful little b**** right now!"

Ethan dropped the suits onto the damp grass, pulled his phone from his pocket with shaking hands, and dialed my number.

*The number you have dialed has been disconnected or is no longer in service. Announcement 4-1-1.*

"Disconnected?!" Ethan gasped, staring at the screen in pure disbelief. "No... no, that's not possible."

He opened his email and saw the 7:00 AM notification. As his eyes scanned my brief, emotionless letter, the color completely drained from his face. His knees buckled slightly, and he had to steady himself against the hood of his leased BMW.

"She sold it," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling so violently that Linda had to lean in to hear him. "She sold the house. She sold everything."

"What do you mean she sold it?!" Linda shrieked, dropping the box of diapers. Diaper packs, baby wipes, and infant rattles tumbled out across the asphalt of the driveway. "She can't sell the house! Where are we supposed to live? Chloe is due in four weeks! Ethan, what about our furniture? What about my room?!"

"Time is up," Marcus Reed announced from the front porch.

Two security guards stepped forward, picked up the remaining garbage bags Ethan had dropped near the door, and carried them past the front gates, dumping them onto the municipal sidewalk.

A heavy mechanical hum echoed through the air as the security team engaged the master locks. Two locksmiths quickly replaced the front door hardware with heavy-duty biometric keypads. At the perimeter, another technician began reprogramming the electronic iron gates.

"Sir, you must move your vehicle off the driveway immediately," the deputy told Ethan. "The driveway is private property. If the vehicle is not on the public street within two minutes, it will be impounded."

Ethan scrambled into the driver’s seat of the BMW, his hands shaking so violently he could barely press the start button. He backed the car out onto the road, parking sloppily against the curb.

Within minutes, the heavy wrought-iron gates of Oakwood Terrace swung shut with a definitive, metallic *clang*. An armed security guard took his post behind the bars, folding his arms and staring coldly at the three of them.

There they stood.

Linda in her pink bathrobe, standing barefoot on the asphalt.

Chloe, sitting on an overturned box of newborn supplies, weeping loudly into her hands while neighbors peeked through their manicured hedges to film the scene on their phones.

And Ethan, holding his suits on wire hangers, standing on the public sidewalk surrounded by plastic bags, loose diapers, and baby monitors.

Ethan pulled out his phone again, desperate. He dialed his banking app to find a hotel.

*Available Balance: $4,012.18.*

He tried to transfer money from the secondary savings account.

*Error: Account closed by primary trustee.*

He tried to open his line of credit.

*Notice: Authorized cardholder privileges revoked.*

"Ethan," Linda whimpered, tugging at his shirt sleeve like a frightened child. "Ethan, book us a room at the Ritz. Chloe needs to lie down. Call a cab. Ethan, look at me!"

May you like

"I can't, Mom," Ethan choked out, his voice cracking into a ragged sob. "I don't have the money. She took it all. She took everything."
