Chapter 5 - The Transatlantic Transfer

By early Tuesday afternoon, the moving van had successfully deposited my grandmother’s heirlooms into a long-term, climate-controlled vault in upstate New York. My clothes, personal jewelry, private documents, and sentimental photographs were secured.
I drove out to the private terminal at Westchester County Airport, then transferred to an international terminal at JFK. My plan had not been conceived in haste; it was the execution of an opportunity I had postponed for nearly two years to accommodate Ethan’s fragile ego.
Before marrying Ethan, I had worked as a Senior Director of Quantitative Risk for an international investment consultancy. Eighteen months ago, the board had offered me a promotion to Managing Director of European Operations, based out of their prestigious Mayfair office in London.
Ethan had vehemently opposed it.
*"What am I supposed to do in England? Be your trophy husband?"* he had raged over dinner back then. *"My career is here. My mother needs me nearby. You're being selfish, Clara. A wife follows her husband’s lead. You don't uproot a man for your corporate vanity."*
Out of love—or what I had foolishly mistaken for love—I had declined the transfer, taking a semi-remote advisory role that allowed me to work from my home office on Oakwood Terrace.
On Monday afternoon, while Ethan and his mother were busy choosing which guest bedroom would be repurposed for Chloe’s diaper station, I had called the CEO of my firm directly.
"Julian," I had said. "Is the London position still open?"
"Clara," Julian had replied without hesitation. "We’ve had two interim directors, neither of whom possessed your institutional command. If you can be on the ground in London by Thursday, the seat is yours. Relocation package, five-year executive visa sponsorship, and complete autonomy over the European portfolio."
"Book the visa fast-track," I told him. "I'll be at Heathrow on Wednesday morning."
Now, sitting in the private departure lounge at JFK, watching the rain streak the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, I completed the remaining administrative amputations.
I pulled out my phone and accessed the municipal utility portal for Oakwood Terrace.
Water: Service scheduled for disconnection at 8:00 AM Wednesday.
Electricity and Gas: Scheduled for final meter reading and shutoff at 8:00 AM Wednesday.
Fiber Optic Internet: Account terminated.
Landscaping and Pool Maintenance: Contract canceled with immediate effect.
Next, I opened my personal email and composed a single, formal message addressed to Ethan, copying his personal email and Arthur Vance:
*Ethan,*
*Attached you will find a copy of the recorded deed transfer for 144 Oakwood Terrace. The property was sold on Tuesday to Meridian Developments. Full legal possession transfers to the new owner effective Wednesday at 8:00 AM.*
*You, your mother, and your sister are currently occupying private commercial property without legal authority. Meridian’s legal agents and private security teams will arrive at eight o’clock tomorrow morning to take physical possession and secure the premises.*
*Your personal belongings, as well as those of your family, must be removed before that time. Any property remaining on the premises after 8:00 AM will be treated as abandoned and disposed of by the buyer.*
*My legal counsel, Arthur Vance, has been instructed to handle all further communications. A petition for the dissolution of our marriage will be served upon you via process server at your office on Friday morning.*
*Do not attempt to contact me. My cell phone service will terminate upon the departure of my flight, and my overseas address will remain strictly confidential.*
*You told me to watch my mouth in front of your family. I found it far more effective to let the law speak for me.*
*Clara Montgomery.*
I scheduled the email to transmit at precisely 7:00 AM Eastern Standard Time the following morning—one hour before the security detail arrived at the front gates.

Then, I stood up, walked toward the gate, handed my first-class boarding pass to the attendant, and stepped down the jetway into the cabin of the Boeing 777 bound for London.
