Chapter 6 - Seven Days of Arrogance

While I was crossing the Atlantic at 38,000 feet, Ethan, Linda, and Chloe spent Tuesday evening revelling in what they believed to be their permanent conquest of Oakwood Terrace.

I knew this because Arthur Vance, ever meticulous, had requested a final operational report from the property management team, who kept the security perimeter under continuous electronic surveillance until the formal handover.

Ethan had invited two of his childhood friends over for drinks to show off "his" expansive estate. They grilled steaks on my custom patio kitchen, drank my imported spirits, and discussed renovations.

"We’re going to knock down that wall between the kitchen and the sunroom," Ethan had bragged, his voice captured clearly on the patio’s outdoor mics. "It’s too closed off. Clara has this old-fashioned taste, but now that my family is running the household, we need a modern, open-concept flow. Linda wants an oversized pantry for Chloe’s baby food preparation."

"Where is Clara anyway, man?" one of his friends asked, leaning against the stone balustrade. "Haven't seen her car around."

"She’s throwing a fit at some hotel," Ethan laughed, downing his whiskey. "Let her cool off. Women like her need to learn boundaries. She thought because her name was on the old deed, she could treat my mother like an unwelcome guest. I put her in her place. She’ll come back with her tail between her legs by the weekend, and when she does, the new house rules will be firmly established."

"And if she doesn't?"

"Where else is she going to go?" Ethan scoffed. "Her parents are dead. Her family is scattered. She has nobody but me. She needs this family. Without us, she's just a lonely woman with a pile of trust money."

Inside the house, Chloe and Linda were busy moving bags of newborn clothing, crib parts, and baby monitors into the completely stripped master bedroom.

"Why did the movers take the bed frame, Ethan?" Linda complained as she walked out to the patio. "There’s nothing in the master suite except bare floors!"

"She was being petty, Mom," Ethan replied, waving his hand dismissively. "She had her heirloom furniture moved into storage to spite us. Don't worry about it. Tomorrow morning, we'll take her credit card and go down to the luxury design center downtown. We’ll buy a brand-new custom king suite and put it on her account. It’ll look better than that antique junk anyway."

"Good," Chloe groaned, adjusting her maternity belt. "Because my back is killing me, and I refuse to spend another night sleeping on that stiff guest mattress downstairs. Tomorrow night, I sleep in the master room."

They went to bed that night in a state of supreme, bloated arrogance. Ethan slept soundly in the downstairs guest bed, confident that his display of dominance had successfully broken my spirit. Linda fell asleep dreaming of the social status she would claim as the matriarch of Oakwood Terrace. And Chloe rested easy, believing she had secured a lifetime of luxury for herself and her unborn child at zero cost.
