Chapter 9 - The Plaza Ambush

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was bathed in the warm glow of crystal chandeliers. New York’s elite—senators, hedge-fund billionaires, foreign dignitaries, and socialites—chattered in hushed, nervous tones. The sudden, violent collapse of Vance Logistics had sent shockwaves through Wall Street, and rumors were swirling that the true power behind the market crash would reveal themselves tonight.

Julian Vance arrived in his last clean tuxedo, his posture rigid, his face tight with forced arrogance. Chloe clung to his arm, wearing a borrowed vintage gown, her eyes darting nervously across the crowd. People who had once begged for Julian’s investment now deliberately turned their backs, pretending not to see him.

"Hold your head up," Julian hissed under his breath. "The press is here. If we show weakness, the vultures will tear us apart."

At eight o’clock sharp, the heavy mahogany double doors at the top of the grand marble staircase swung open.

The room fell into an immediate, breathless silence. The string quartet stopped playing mid-measure.

Two rows of private security personnel in immaculate charcoal suits formed an escort down the red-carpeted stairs. Behind them walked Arthur Sterling—a man whose face was rarely seen in public, but whose absolute power was instantly recognized by every titan in the room. Several elderly billionaires instinctively straightened their ties and bowed their heads in deference.

But Arthur was not the center of attention.

On his arm walked Elena.

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom. Julian felt the floor drop out from beneath his feet. The champagne flute in his hand slipped, shattering loudly against the parquet floor.

"Elena...?" he breathed, his voice strangled.

She didn't look like the woman who had cried in his garden. She looked like an empress returning to claim a conquered province. Every diamond on her throat caught the light like fire. Her gaze swept over the crowd, regal, detached, and utterly unyielding, until it landed squarely on Julian and Chloe.

Chloe’s knees trembled. "No... no, that’s impossible. She’s... she’s his daughter?"

Elena descended the stairs, each click of her heels sounding like a death knell in Julian’s ears. The elite parted like the Red Sea, creating an open corridor straight toward the trembling couple.

Elena stopped three paces away. Her eyes looked Julian up and down, as if examining a stain on the carpet.

"Good evening, Julian," she said, her voice clear, musical, and ringing across the silent hall. "You look unwell. Is the wine not to your liking?"
