Chapter 7 - The Encirclement

Within forty-eight hours, Julian Vance went from being one of Manhattan’s most eligible young tycoons to an untouchable pariah.
The Long Island estate was padlocked. His luxury cars were hoisted onto flatbed tow trucks under the watchful gaze of armed federal marshals. Julian and Chloe were forced to retreat to a cramped, rented penthouse in Queens that Chloe’s father had purchased years ago—a property that felt like a prison compared to the gilded halls they were accustomed to.
"You said she was nobody!" Chloe screamed, throwing a hairbrush across the living room. "You told me she was an orphan with a pathetic trust fund! Now my father’s export business in Lyon has been frozen by European regulators! We have no money, Julian! The credit cards declined at the grocery store!"
Julian sat on the threadbare sofa, unshaven, his eyes bloodshot, clutching a half-empty bottle of cheap whiskey. "Shut up, Chloe! Just shut up!"
"Don't you yell at me!" she shrieked, tears ruining her heavy makeup. "Fix this! Call your lawyer! File a police report against her! She stole your child! File for divorce and sue her for abandonment and theft!"
Julian grasped at the idea like a drowning man clutching a straw. "Yes... the child. The child is legally a Vance. She can't hide a newborn heir from the father. The family court will grant me custody, and with custody comes child support from whatever shadowy cartel her family runs."
He lunged for his laptop, drafting an emergency petition to the Manhattan Family Court, alleging parental alienation, kidnapping, and the illicit draining of marital assets.
Ten minutes later, his screen went black.
The screen flickered, and a single PDF document automatically opened, overriding his controls. It was a digital summons for the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, scheduled for Friday evening: *The Annual Sovereign Charity Gala.*
At the bottom of the invitation was a handwritten note in dark blue fountain pen ink:
May you like
*Come claim what you think is yours, Julian. Let the world see you try.*
