Chapter 2 - The Severed Thread

The agony ripped through Elena’s spine like an electric wire. Her knees buckled completely, the sharp gravel grinding directly into raw skin. She gripped the edge of the iron table, her knuckles white, her breath sawing raggedly through parted lips. Beneath her palms, droplets of her own blood mingled with the trampled petals of white hydrangeas.

Julian didn't bend down. He didn't flinch. Instead, he took an unhurried sip from his champagne flute, his cold blue eyes assessing her writhing form with clinical annoyance.

"Stop the theatrical performance, Elena," Julian said, his tone flat and dismissive. "You think clutching your stomach makes you look fragile? It makes you look pathetic. Our investors from the Mercer Group are due at six o’clock. If you think you're sitting at the head of the table looking like a disgraced scullery maid, you are sorely mistaken."

Chloe stepped forward, leaning her weight against Julian’s shoulder, trailing one French-manicured fingernail down the lapel of his tailored linen suit. Her lips curved into a smug, venomous smile. "Julian, darling, why do you even bother? Look at her. She’s probably faking the contractions just so you’ll pity her and cancel my reception. She’s jealous. She knows she could never carry your name the way I can."

"I am not faking," Elena choked out, the world spinning in nauseating circles of blinding white light and shadow. A hot, terrifying wetness trickled down the inside of her thigh. "Julian... the baby. Something is wrong. Call an ambulance. Please, for God's sake, call an ambulance!"

Julian glanced down at the dark stain blooming through the pale grey fabric of her maternity trousers. For a split second, a flicker of hesitation touched his eyes, but Chloe scoffed loudly, breaking the spell.

"An ambulance? With sirens blaring down the private driveway just as the Vanguard board members arrive?" Chloe shook her head, laughing softly. "Julian, it will cause a public relations disaster. The tabloids will say your home is in chaos. Let her walk up to the guest cottage at the back of the property if she wants to rest. She’s survived seven months; she’s not going to break now."

Julian adjusted his gold cufflinks, his jaw hardening into a mask of total apathy. "Chloe is right. No sirens. No scandals. Maria can bring you some herbal tea in the back quarters once the catering staff finishes setting up the ice sculptures. Until then, get off the main terrace. You are ruining the view."

Without waiting for her reply, Julian turned his back, placing a possessive hand on the small of Chloe’s back as they strolled back toward the open French doors of the grand ballroom, their shared laughter floating back like poison on the summer breeze.

Elena collapsed onto her side against the hard flagstones. The pain came in waves now, suffocating and relentless. The estate staff stood frozen along the perimeter, terrified of losing their livelihoods if they defied Julian Vance’s strict orders.

Only Maria, the aging head housekeeper who had served the estate long before Julian’s ascent, broke rank. Dropping a tray of crystal glasses onto the grass, the old woman hurried over, sinking to her knees beside Elena.

"Mrs. Vance—Elena, dear child," Maria whispered, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks as she cradled Elena’s shoulders. "Oh merciful God, you're bleeding. He won't let me call the town medics, he threatened to fire anyone who picked up the landline—"

"Maria," Elena gasped, clutching the older woman’s apron with fingers that felt like ice. Her vision was tunneling, dark spots dancing across the azure sky. "The cedar box... beneath my mattress. The small black phone with the silver crest. Bring it to me. Hurry... before my baby dies."
