Chapter 8 - The Queen Reborn

In the penthouse suite of the Sterling Tower overlooking Central Park, the scent of lavender and sterile medicine had been replaced by the rich, warm fragrance of white lilies and cedarwood.

Elena stood before a floor-to-ceiling gilded mirror.

Gone was the frail, beaten woman who had knelt in the dirt on Julian Vance’s terrace. She wore a bespoke evening gown of liquid midnight-blue silk that cascaded over her figure, cut with impeccable precision to flatter her post-partum grace. Around her neck sat the Sterling Tears—a priceless necklace of raw, unheated sapphires and flawless diamonds that had once belonged to the Romanov royalty. Her dark hair was swept up into an intricate, regal crown, exposing her pale, unblemished neck and the icy determination burning in her emerald eyes.

Behind her, Arthur Sterling sat in an armchair, watching his daughter with quiet, ferocious pride. In a bassinet beside him, little Leo slept soundly, wrapped in cashmere, guarded by two covert operators stationed at the doorway.

"You don't have to face him publicly, Elena," Arthur said softly, his voice carrying the warmth reserved only for her. "I can have him placed on an unmarked container ship tonight. He will spend the rest of his life working in a phosphate mine in North Africa."

Elena turned, looking at her reflection one last time. She adjusted the diamond cuff on her wrist—the wrist Julian had once bruised when she didn't pour his wine quickly enough.

"No, Father," Elena replied, her voice smooth, level, and colder than the Arctic ice. "A quick disappearance is mercy. Julian Vance spent three years trying to convince me that I was worthless. He convinced the world that he was a self-made titan while standing on my shoulders. I want him to look into my eyes when every illusion he ever built crumbles into dust."

Arthur’s lips curled into a rare, predatory smile. He stood, offering his arm to his daughter.
