Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Architecture

I stayed frozen until the elevator doors slid shut behind them, sealing them into their fabricated sanctuary. Then, I stood up and walked directly to the reception counter of the prenatal suite. The administrative nurse looked up, surprised by the stark, pale fury etched across my face. I gave my name for my scan, sat through the ultrasound in stone silence, and wept only when the technician pointed out the steady, flickering white pulse on the screen—my child, thriving despite the poison surrounding us.
When I returned to my car, I didn't cry. The despair had burned off, replaced by cold, surgical clarity. Brandon had believed I was a compliant, quiet girl who would retreat into shame and allow him to dictate the narrative. He had forgotten that my career as a senior commercial interior designer required managing complex municipal contracts, tracking every invoice, and auditing forensic balance sheets down to the penny.
I immediately called Marcus Vance—not Waylon, but their estranged eldest brother, an attorney in San Francisco who had severed ties with Brandon’s clan years ago after being cheated out of his inheritance. When Marcus answered, I laid out the raw facts: the salon assault, the theft of the twenty-two thousand dollars from our joint account, the fraudulent business transfer, and the medical encounter I had witnessed thirty minutes prior.
Marcus listened without interrupting, his intake of breath sharp and deliberate over the line. "Naomi, Brandon’s father has been using Brianna’s salon to launder personal debt for three years," Marcus revealed. "Brianna and Brandon have been sleeping together since college. When she got pregnant, their whole family panicked because your design company’s partnership and your personal savings were supposed to fund Brandon’s commercial real estate venture. You were their piggy bank and their social cover."

"I have the bank records," I said, watching the gray rain beat against the windshield. "And I have the police report ready for the assault on my mother."
"File everything," Marcus said coldly. "Don't negotiate. Don't confront him in private. We freeze his assets before he realizes you hold every card in the deck."
