Chapter 4 - The Clinic Corridor

The following morning broke gray and misty over the valley. I had an appointment at nine o'clock at the Valley Women's Health Pavilion—a routine second-trimester viability scan that I had scheduled a month in advance. I debated canceling, terrified that the stress of the past twenty-four hours had jeopardized the tiny life inside me, but the dull cramping in my lower back urged me forward. Leaving Mom resting at home with a hot breakfast, I drove across town, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

The pavilion was quiet on a Sunday morning, catering primarily to scheduled ultrasounds and specialized maternal care. I checked in at the third-floor reception desk and sat in the waiting room, clutching the clipboard with my updated emergency contacts. Brandon’s name had already been struck through with a thick black line; Mom was now my sole proxy.

As I waited, the glass double doors leading to the high-risk ultrasound suite swung open. Two figures stepped into the quiet hallway, speaking in hushed, urgent tones. My body went completely rigid. Walking side by side, their fingers intertwined, were Brandon and Brianna.

Brianna wore an oversized beige trench coat, a designer silk scarf wrapped securely around her cropped head to conceal the jagged ponytail I had sliced off the day before. Brandon held her medical folder under one arm, his other hand rubbing small, rhythmic circles against the small of her back. The tenderness in his posture was unmistakable—it was the exact posture he had never once offered me when I was sick or overwhelmed.

"The specialist said fourteen weeks is the ideal window for the anatomical scan, Brandon," Brianna said, her voice carrying clearly down the carpeted corridor. "The heartbeat is strong. Once the salon remodel finishes with that money you transferred, everything will be ready for the nursery in the back suite."

Brandon leaned down, pressing his lips against the temple of the woman he had introduced as merely his harmless childhood friend. "Don't stress about yesterday, Bri. Naomi’s completely out of the picture now. The money is legally yours, and by winter, nobody will care how our baby arrived."

I pressed myself deep into the alcove behind an informational display, the blood roaring so loudly in my ears that the world seemed to tilt on its axis. Fourteen weeks. Brianna was fourteen weeks pregnant with Brandon’s child. While he had been planning our wedding, promising forever, and sleeping in my bed, he had fathered a child with Brianna and funneled my life savings into their secret domestic empire.
