Chapter 2 - Dust in the Wake

We walked out into the crisp afternoon air, ignoring the explosive chorus of shouts, curses, and slamming doors echoing behind us. Brandon’s father bellowed about venue deposits and public humiliation; Brandon’s mother shrieked that I was an unstable lunatic who would die alone. Brandon himself ran to the top of the stone veranda, demanding I return inside before our two hundred invited guests began arriving. I never turned around. My knuckles were white around my mother’s wrist as I guided her toward my modest hatchback parked beneath the venue’s cedar trees.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of the car, the adrenaline that had sustained me began to dissolve into a bone-deep ache. Mom slumped against the passenger seat, staring into the side mirror. In the glass, her uneven, shorn hair looked like the aftermath of an assault, which was precisely what it had been. She touched the jagged ends near her ear, her lower lip quivering. For thirty years, that braid had been her living tether to her own mother, who had brushed it every morning before school in their small coastal home. Losing it in an act of petty, vindictive cruelty felt like a second funeral.
"I'm sorry, Naomi," she whispered, her voice cracked and fragile. "I ruined your wedding. If I had just stayed home this morning—if I hadn't let Brandon talk me into her salon—"

"Stop, Mom," I said, my voice steady despite the hot tears burning my eyes. "You didn't ruin anything. Brandon and Brianna revealed who they are. They gave me the greatest gift of my life two hours before I signed a legal contract binding me to a monster."
As I turned the ignition and pulled onto the highway heading away from San Jose, I pressed my right palm against my lower abdomen. Beneath the fabric of my dark sweater rested a profound secret. I was ten weeks pregnant. For two weeks, I had carried the sonogram in my purse, planning to tuck it inside Brandon’s wedding gift box during our flight to Maui. I had imagined his joyful tears, his proud embrace, his vows to build an impenetrable fortress around our little family. Now, nausea twisted through my stomach. The baby growing inside me would never know Brandon as a protector, because Brandon was incapable of protecting anyone other than the insidious shadows of his past.
