Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The blue and red flashing lights of emergency vehicles lit up the coastal mist as Dante’s loyal captains finally cordoned off the entire sector. But there were no police sirens; the Moretti family handled its internal violence far away from public record.
A private medical ambulance—equipped with high-end diagnostic gear and staffed by trauma surgeons on the Moretti payroll—pulled directly into the cannery lot.
Elena sat on a gurney inside the heated vehicle, wrapped in three wool blankets, an IV line taped to the back of her hand. An obstetrician was performing an emergency ultrasound while two paramedics treated the laceration on her forehead.
Dante stood by the ambulance doors, refusing treatment for his broken arm until the doctor finished the scan. He looked battered, soaked in saltwater, his clothes ruined, his prestige stripped away—looking like nothing more than a desperate man awaiting a verdict from God.
"Doctor," Dante commanded, his voice trembling. "Talk to me."
The doctor adjusted the ultrasound probe on Elena’s stomach. The rhythmic, galloping sound of a fetal heartbeat filled the small cabin, loud and unbroken.
*Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*
Elena let out a ragged breath she felt she had been holding for six months, burying her face in her hands as tears finally broke through her defenses.
"The placenta is intact," the physician announced, letting out a relieved sigh. "Minor uterine irritability, but the cervix is closed and the fetal vitals are completely stable. With two weeks of strict bed rest, Mrs. Moretti and the baby will be completely fine."
Dante leaned his forehead against the metal frame of the ambulance, his shoulders shaking in silent sobs.
Ten minutes later, the doctor stepped out to set Dante’s arm. Elena sat alone in the warmth of the cabin.
Leo, Dante’s security chief, approached the ambulance holding a clear evidence bag containing Bianca’s decrypted burner phone and the recovered original documents from the Harborview suite.
"She’s alive, Mrs. Moretti," Leo said respectfully, keeping his eyes lowered. "Bianca Salvi. She’s in the custody of the docks tribunal. Mr. Moretti asked me to tell you that her fate is entirely yours to decide."
Elena looked at the documents through the plastic bag. The truth was laid bare: Anthony hadn't been a traitor. He had discovered Bianca’s dealings with Falcone and had been assassinated by her orders to keep the supply line open. Dante had spent half a year mourning a ghost and doubting his brother’s honor, manipulated by a psychopath who preyed on his grief.
"Hand her over to the federal customs authority along with every piece of evidence in that bag," Elena said, her voice clear and decisive. "Anonymous drop at the Boston field office. Let her spend the rest of her life in a federal penitentiary with no bail and no family money."
Leo nodded once. "Understood, Mrs. Moretti."

He turned away. A new authority had been established on the North Shore, and it didn't belong to the man with the gun.
