Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at Pier Seventeen

Marco Falcone walked into the warehouse flanked by six heavily armed mercenaries. Beside him, dragged by her hair by a scarred lieutenant, was Bianca Salvi. Her face was bruised, her designer coat torn.

"Look at this touching family portrait," Falcone sneered, adjusting the lapels of his leather trench coat. He was an older man, silver-haired, with the dead eyes of a career predator. "The King of Marblehead on his knees in fish guts."

Dante stood up slowly, positioning his body directly between Falcone’s guns and Elena. His left arm hung limp, but his right hand slipped into his waistband, fingering the small backup revolver concealed beneath his belt.

"Falcone," Dante said evenly. "This is between you and me. Let Elena take the car."

Falcone chuckled, a wet, rattling sound. "She knows too much about the Pier Seventeen coding, Moretti. She wrote the program. My tech guys spent three months trying to reroute our shipments through your terminals, and her legacy security protocols flagged every single container. She cost me thirty million dollars in military contraband."

Elena stepped slightly out from behind Dante’s shoulder, her chin held high despite the pale exhaustion draining her face.

"You used twenty-ton refrigerated containers labeled for raw zinc," Elena said loudly, her voice echoing off the corrugated iron. "You bypassed the customs weighing scales by falsifying the tare weights on the bills. But you forgot one thing, Marco."

Falcone frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"The Pier Seventeen cranes have automated stress sensors integrated into the rail tracks," Elena continued, cold confidence returning to her eyes. "You can falsify the paperwork, but you can't falsify the hydraulic pressure on the overhead gantry. The minute your crew tried to offload those containers at midnight, the harbor grid automatically locked down the berths. You didn't come here to kill Dante because of a turf war. You came here because you need my master override key to get your cargo out before the Coast Guard boards the ship at dawn."

Falcone’s sneer vanished. His eyes darted to Bianca.

"You told me she was just a civilian wife!" Falcone snapped.

Bianca sobbed, her voice trembling with hysteria. "She was just an office clerk! I didn't know she had root access to the terminal servers!"

Dante glanced sideways at his wife, a faint, incredulous glimmer of pride breaking through his grim expression.

"She isn't an office clerk," Dante said softly, loud enough for every man in the room to hear. "She’s the woman who runs this harbor."
